We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Olguin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melissa, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Taking risks have always been a scary though. Many times the risk I think I want to take, I’m too scared to take. I end up thinking of all possible outcomes of why it won’t work. I’ve come to learn that life is about taking risks. Whenever I have taken a risk, whether it was something that worked out or not, some thing good has come out of it. I was always able to experience something I never thought I would be able to experience if it wasn’t for taking that risk. I recently took the risk to move across the country away from my family, friends, and clients I had in LA to go experience something new. I have always wanted to live in NYC and see what work I can do out there. I took that risks to go after my dreams and to experience life at it’s fullest. I have come to a place where I don’t know anyone, except that one of my best friends has moved out there as well. It has been challenging, but I have learned so much about myself since being out here. I’m learning how to navigate life on my own and how learning so much about what I want out of life. It took me a few months to commit to moving, but I did it. I also took a risk on my career. I have played it safe for a while when it came to work so that I will have consistent income, but taking the risk on myself for my creative career has been the best one yet. I feel so happy in myself and happy that I get to create work that I want to create. I think we all have to take risks in our life, no matter how scary. Learning more about ourselves is such a great gift and taking risks helps us to learn more about ourselves.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a photographer, prop/interior stylist, and creative. I love to say that I’m a creative that can help you bring any project you have to life. I’m so proud to be able to have clients where I can capture photos of things that interest me and to also have styled a small TV show segment last year. It definitely wasn’t an easy thing to do. I have not believed in myself for many years. I have been lucky to have people believe in me and help me through the process to get to where I am at currently. Every opportunity has been a word of mouth from other people I have worked with. It shows that you can be the most talented and people will want to work with you or recommend you to people because of the experience you made together. Being kind and providing a great work environment for everyone will have people wanting to work with you again. I think the most important thing is to believe in yourself and to take that risk. You can’t wait until you feel ready because you won’t ever feel 100 percent ready. You have to just take that leap and believe in yourself. We often can be our worse critics, but we need to be our number one fan.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’ve been lucky enough to have my family visit me in NYC since I moved out here. Our day would definitely consist of something that involves art. Whether there is an art exhibit happening or to go to a museum out in the city. Food is a big thing and I feel like NYC has so many places to eat at. Another thing would be some type of antique store or flea market or thrift store. I love to find gems in places to call my own.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family definitely deserves all the recognition for my story. As human beings we always have self doubt in ourselves. Through out the years I have had so much self doubt and my family was there to lift me up and support me through out those times. They also talk to people and recommend me to people so much. I don’t know where I would be without their love and support.
