We had the good fortune of connecting with Meymuna Hussein-Cattan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Meymuna, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
Gratitude! Over a decade in the nonprofit sector has taught me that relationships are key and tasks as secondary. If you operate from a humble place, people will gravitate towards helping you achieve your vision. If they feel underappreciated, it will show up in their behavior and work ethic. Although it’s not a perfect journey, this understanding is something that has helped me, secure long-term customers, at Flavors from Afar and why we are surviving during a global pandemic.
What should our readers know about your business?
Flavors from Afar is an amazing destination spot in the city! Our menu rotates monthly and highlights foods from around the globe. So far, we have featured food from Belize, Somalia, Venezuela, and Guatemala. This August we are highlighting Coastal Kenyan Cuisine. The beauty of each dish is that you’re helping the community as you feast. As a social enterprise, we employ former refugees and asylum seekers starting over in Los Angeles and Orange County.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
I’m obsessed with LA’s beach towns, museums, and our downtown skyline. If time permitted, I would start at the beach in the morning and have breakfast. Then I would visit a local museum like LACMA or MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art). Then I would head over to downtown to enjoy a rooftop restaurant or two.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shout out to my co-founder of Flavors from Afar, Christian Davis! We were introduced to each other through a mutual friend. After being recruited in 2020 as a Program Manager, Christian was invited to become a Founding Member of Flavors. Outside of my mom and husband, this was the first time I invited a friend to join my founding team. It felt natural. After the stay-at-home orders were placed, I watched how invested Christian was in creating the success of our restaurant. He treats every aspect of the business with so much thoughtfulness. He designed the restaurant with his mother, Elaine, while keeping the team and customer experiences in mind. In a short time, we’ve overcome some major crises together including opening our doors during a global pandemic and a fire that caused us to lose business for 3 weeks. Christian not only helped to elevate the brand experience and awareness, he also contributed to my mental health during these unprecedented times.
