We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle MaliZaki and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michelle, what’s the most important thing you’ve done for your children?
The most important thing as a parent is to be a role model for the kids. I’ve done a lot of stupid things because I didn’t know better. But I’ve also done many things “right” because my parents showed me how. My kids used to do things in a way I don’t want them to, and I was asking myself “why are they doing that?” Then I realized I was showing them how to do it wrong! Now, I try to (“try to” is the key words here…) think what can I do to help my kids, and I try to do it better.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m an evangelist for a 100 year old Japanese notebook/sketchbook company called Maruman. In Japan, they are famous for their sketchbooks and leading brand for loose leaf binders. I want to let people know about their smooth writing paper, which are all custom made and only 4 people in the world know the formula. It is just the right thickness for writing jokes and keeping journals.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Kinokuniya in downtown Los Angeles is my favorite bookstore. I LOVE reading! And they have both Japanese and English books. Their stationery and gift offerings are amazing as well. I also love Chinatown near by. There’s a special stationery store called Paper Please. They have great selections of cards, notebooks and has a coffee shop in the store.
