Meet Mickey Hargitay | Owner, Mickey Hargitay Plants

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mickey Hargitay and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi MICKEY, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My Business might be described as a labor of love, there was no business model or plan just an organic evolution over the years. I’ve heard that if you love what you do it doesn’t feel like work. I look forward to going in to work each day and welcome the challenges that may come. I’m still not sure if it’s a blessing or a curse but I have a very strong work ethic, a natural inclination to nurture and am not super social so working with plants seems to be a good fit. Putting all these ingredients together seems to have created something that works.

What should our readers know about your business?
My Business is very simple, I sell Plants. There are so many layers underneath that though! There is the biology of what seems like magic when a new leaf unfolds or a seed sprouts. There are the comforting aspects that a plant and a beautiful pot offer to our living spaces. There is the karma building side of doing Gods work and helping a plant to grow, it seems endless to me. I believe everyone has an innate desire to connect to nature especially as society seems to be becoming more and more removed from those things that are basic and real. It’s almost like a homecoming when someone walks into the shop pauses for a minute takes a deep breath and then says wow this is really nice. It feels good when I see that connection happen. At Mickey’s Plants we pride ourselves on offering great customer service in a corporate big box world where its often hard to find a human to ask for help. We specialize in indoor plants, cactus, succulents and garden related products. We also provide interior plant maintenance services, I nstallion as well as exterior landscape installation. I started this business in 1980 and it has certainly been a wild ride. As in life there are no guarantees other than things will change when you run a business and for me it has been all about taking it as it comes and learning as you go.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would dedicate my shout out to my Dad Mickey Hargitay. My Father was my hero, he was a self made man born in communist Hungary with dreams of coming to the US for a better life. My Father arrived here with seven dollars in his pocket and would tell us he still has that seven dollars. He taught me that you can have anything you want in life if you work hard and set your mind to it. My Father was a man of principle, determination and strong moral values. He lives in me and is my light and a force that leads me on a daily basis, big shout out for all that you’ve taught me Dad!
