We had the good fortune of connecting with Miika Mz.Inkbomb Coffey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Miika Mz.Inkbomb, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued an artistic career all because I felt self expression is most important to me also because a lot of times I tend to be a “Loner” at times so to be able to express myself through art means everything to me.\
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from others I’d say I create art for the streets and people that can relate. Also with being a female in a very predominant male industry you have to have a strong backbone. What Im most excited about is my new business venture with going Mobil and taking my tattoo business to new heights. I got to where I am today by not taking no for an answer and quitting my part time jobs to tattoo full time, getting flyers made and standing outside in the parking lots just passing out my cards not knowing where it would take me or what I was getting myself into. 2009 is when I got discovered in a small shopping center on Slauson and Crenshaw Called Slauson Tee’s where I got introduced to Rapper Nipsey Hussle and his Brother Blac Sam.
As confident as I was they quickly shot me down as one of there friends said ”Yeah Right you don’t do tattoos”. That same day I did a tattoo right there in the shop proving that I was serious about my craft, Tattooing there almost every day. Making a buzz for myself around the neighborhood word had spread fast. Later that year in that same parking lot is where Nipsey pulled up on me and told me to pull up to the studio and the rest is pretty much history.
The lesson I’ve learned along the way is to never give up or care about what someone else thinks of you just keep doing you and the rest will follow through. What I would want the world to know about my brand is that it’s for everyone who loves ink and passionate about art in general since it’s the only thing we can take to our graves I feel it’s only right. I just hope I’m a role model for all little girls one day to be something in life and not depend on no one but yourself.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If it was a week long trip I go up north to the bay and go eat at the soul food spot called Lena’s located in East Oakland. Then go downtown Sacramento and bar hop with a few friends and family. In my view the most exciting people would have to be my elders how they talk there little sayings just everything about them and places to visit I would have to say anywhere because I really haven’t been too many places.Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My Mom and my boyfriend I thank them for never giving up on me keeping me motivated and always being there for me even though their tough on me and I give them the hardest time I love them with all my heart, and appreciate them to the fullest.
