We had the good fortune of connecting with Mikaela Baker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mikaela, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
My personal motto is, “there’s only one way to find out”. I don’t think about risk because i’ve committed to the idea that every choice we make each day is a risk whether we know it or not. I make my “riskier” decisions knowing everything will continue to “work out’ the way it always has in the past. Therefore, taking risks never truly feels risky. I try to always do what I want to do and not do what I don’t want to. The only true risky decision is the decision to not at least try.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am the owner of Sac City Stems, a plant shop based in Sacramento, California. My business was born in a global pandemic, I’m extremely proud of that, alone. I think the most challenging part is also exactly that. TO have a successful business, you have to get people to care about what you’re doing. It’s difficult to make meaningful connections with people while being quite literally, disconnected. It’s been extremely affirming to see the way people resonate with myself and our brand despite that. The biggest lesson I’ve learend thus far is to never lose sight of your WHY. We try very hard to remain the same in our mission. With the constant changes in our daily lives, often we want to cut corners to make things “happen”…. you can’t do that if you want to remain connected to the people that love what you’re doing. you’ve got to remember your why.
I want the world to know that everything we do at Sac City Stems is done with love and intention. Community is everything. We do it for y’all.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As a flight attendant, I have friends all over the country that visit here and there. I Love showing them my city. You’d be surprised how many people think Sacramento is just farmland and the capital. Because I feel mexican food is not the best in some other parts of the county, in some other parts of the country, I’m almost always going to take my out of towners for tacos and tequila! W’ed spend our Saturday evening at alogorhythm day party… shoutout to my guys over there @Algor.Rhytm on IG! Sunday, we’re brunching.. catch us somewhere on a scooter in midtown.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m gonna give a Shoutout to my kid, Kennedy. My constant reminder to stay wild. She is honest and fearless, I try to mimic that.
