We had the good fortune of connecting with Mike Gerbrandt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mike, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started planning and designing my own games in 2015 (when the escape game craze had just started to really gain traction here in the U.S.) after being contracted to write a few experiences for a room that was about to open up that year. It took careful consideration, but we determined that there was no reason these kinds of games had to be confined to a single room. Starting your own business can be a very intimidating thought, but if you have the passion and the drive (and by the way you need both) – then take a leap of faith. We went for it and now we’ve had thousands of players (as we say) play outside the box!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We’re in the business of blowing minds. Our art comes in the form of completely unique clues, puzzles and situations – even intense interactions with live actors. This really sets us apart from other escape games, some of which (while very interesting) can be very predictable. There is no substitute for true originality and we’ve learned that our customers can see and feel the difference. Some of our proudest moments come when players comment (as well as leave reviews) about how they felt like they were in a T.V. show or movie. Even members of the L.A.P.D. were beside themselves after we designed a custom game for their holiday party at Wattle’s Mansion in Hollywood!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Definitely my wife Kristy, and our 3 kids, Kami, Maci & Kolton. Without their support and cheerleading, I wouldn’t be able to produce even half of the creativity I do!
