We had the good fortune of connecting with Mike Tauber and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mike, how do you think about risk?
As a visual artist all my life, I take risks on a regular basis. I will say most times they have positive outcomes. I define a risk as taking an action – and not always knowing the result. There may be loss or negative consequences, but also may be some wins. I rely on intuition, or a gut feeling, a lot in making decisions. In some cases I’ll go somewhere, not exactly knowing why, and then I’ll meet a person who would have a hugely important role in my future. Or I’ll reject a project, which leaves me some space, and a new, and better opportunity fills that space. I believe in stating affirmations, and that we can manifest positive growth.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
It’s rough going having a career as an artist, one must budget carefully! I get bored easily, so I’m lucky to be a muralist. This allows me to adjust my style, technique, and subject matter based on the location. A muralist is somewhat of a “service provider” and I like that. I’m a listener and a problem solver – and the art I create is made to fill a need. Sometimes it’s to beautify a space, create a message, create an identity, or a feeling. It’s very satisfying to have my customer, be it an individual, group, or public entity, be happy with what I created for them.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Hollywood Reservoir for a bike ride – several times around. Venice Beach by bike, head south all the way to Marina Del Rey.
Broad Museum – fresh exciting for everyone, even non-artists.
Union Station – enjoy a classic gin martini in the classic architecture.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
All my art school teachers! These people have encouraged and guided me, from Visitation Grade School and York High School in Elmhurst Illinois, to the faculty at San Diego State University where I completed my BA Degree in Art. Also the LGBT community everywhere, who encourages people everywhere to embrace their individuality and authenticity – which is a foundation for being an artist.
