We had the good fortune of connecting with Mike Visser and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mike, why did you pursue a creative career?
You don’t choose pursuing an artistic or creative career, it chooses you at a certain point in your life. For me (Mike) I was on vacation and I got a chance to witness a friends dad play an acoustic guitar around a campfire and I knew that was what I was going to do. That was the direction I gravitated towards and it’s who I was, it was an aha moment.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The pursuit of the next song is the most important for us, sometimes they’ll come in 10 minuets and some are riffs from years ago that are still being worked on today. We really love to play, weather it be in our rehearsal space or for a crowd, and if someone gets inspired that’s the ultimate reward. We enjoy creating music for the purpose of creating and being present while in those moments. What sets us apart is the constant feedback at live shows when people talk to us scratching their heads and saying they don’t know what they just saw. We’re all about tapping into the source of giving back the same feeling we had when we were inspired by others who moved us musically.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We’d tell them to go to La Cumbanchita, KCBC, Sals, Union Pizza Works, walk around Maria Hernandez Park and then see a play at the Bushwick Starr. We really love sitting outside our rehearsal space on Starr and hanging out with Melinda  (@foodbabysoul) as she carts beautiful potted plants around making the block look amazing.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Infinite gratitude to this tiny list of bands and artists that have inspired us over the years, The Cure, Stevie Wonder, Fugazi, Herbie Hancock, Jimi Hendrix, John Coltrane, Aphex Twin, Rage Against The Machine and many many pages worth of more. Shout out to Luigi’s dad for playing guitar around that camp fire, and Hawkins Music in Carmichael Ca. where my parents bought me my first guitar.
