Meet Mimi Liu | Motion Graphic Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mimi Liu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mimi, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Growing up, I was a really quiet kid, so I preferred to communicate and express myself through visuals. This sparked my fascination with art and typography. In high school, I discovered graphic design and fell in love with it immediately. I knew I had the talent and was willing to work hard to become the best designer I could be. The endless possibilities that come with creativity is what excites me the most about pursuing a creative career.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I didn’t have your typical college experience. After getting bachelor’s degrees in Cognitive Science and Linguistics, I went on to pursue a third bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design. I wasn’t completely sure what I wanted to study at first, so I studied very interdisciplinary subjects, like cognitive science, to learn a little bit about a lot. But during that time, I slowly started to realize that I actually wanted to pursue a career in design. It was what I felt most passionate about. So I decided to get professional training in graphic design after graduating, which led me to ArtCenter. And now here I am, finishing up my last two terms of art school.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned throughout my journey is to never give up on yourself. There are going to be days when you’ll feel like you’re making absolutely no progress but just trust yourself that if you keep going, you will eventually make it to where you want to be. Just keep moving. It’s so important to believe in your abilities, your voice, and your opinions. Stand up for yourself and what you believe in. Identify your weaknesses and work hard to improve them. Always do your research. And don’t forget to be kind.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were to visit Los Angeles, I would recommend them to:
– visit Griffith Observatory during sunset
– eat in Koreatown and 626 area for delicious Asian food
– check out all the art museums in downtown LA
– play in the sand and water at one of the beaches
– shop 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents! Even though in the beginning they were hesitant in letting me pursue a creative career, now they are my biggest supporters and I could not be where I am today without their endless love, patience, and encouragement.
