We had the good fortune of connecting with Miss Daisy Serena Sutherland and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Miss Daisy, what inspires you?
I’m deeply inspired by the simple yet profound beauty of nature—like the sun shining on flowers and grass or the way water meets the sand. I’m equally moved by how we communicate emotions, reflecting our shared humanity. History captivates me as it not only helps me understand myself but also connects me to the world on a deeper level. My creativity is rooted in my inner child and shaped by experiences from my early years, which makes my art a reflection of who I was, who I am, and who I’m becoming. Art, to me, is a timeless space where past, present, and future merge, allowing me to tap into emotions and memories that shape and reshape me. I’m also inspired by social justice and by life itself—the raw beauty of existence, from the emotions we feel to the people we meet. Existence, in its most elemental form, is my inspiration, and imagination is the beating heart of my creative process. Holding onto that sense of wonder and embracing our true selves is something I believe we should carry with us as we grow.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is a reflection of my identity as an eccentric, eclectic expressionist. I create from a place where anything is possible, embracing the power of imagination to explore concepts of time, nature, social justice, mental health, and inner joy. My journey started five years ago in university, just as the pandemic hit, which became a pivotal moment for me. Unsure about my academic path, I decided to explore entrepreneurship and creative ventures. I pursued various projects, from shadowing CEOs to launching my own lash business, which eventually led me to realize that my true passion was not just building businesses but creating meaningful art.

Modeling, yoga, and self-expression became my outlets, and I transformed my basement into a home studio where I brought my creative visions to life. This experimentation led to the birth of *Safe Haven*, a magazine and a life project that has become my artistic anchor. While I’ve faced challenges, like losing my team for *Safe Haven*, these experiences taught me valuable lessons in resilience, community, and self-worth. I’ve learned to embrace failure as part of the journey and to value mindfulness, which has become central to my approach to life and art.

What I want the world to know about me and my story is that we are all unique yet equal, and our individuality is our strength. I am committed to creating a space I call *Safe Haven*, a hub where creatives, nomads, and entrepreneurs can gather, learn, and build community. Building this community has not been easy, but I trust that each step brings me closer to a world where collaboration and authenticity are celebrated.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting the GTA, Mississauga, or Toronto for the first time, I’d create an itinerary that shows off the area’s best spots. To kick off the week, we’d take the ferry to Toronto Island, where we could soak up nature, stroll along the shoreline, and enjoy the calming energy of the water. Water has this grounding quality, and it’s an ideal start to the trip.

Next, we’d head to Kensington Market, one of Toronto’s hidden gems, packed with incredible food, art, music, and unique little shops. We’d get tacos, fresh-pressed juice, and maybe finish off with some churros. From there, we’d wander through the city a bit before heading to the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO)—it’s free for people under 25, so we’d take advantage, exploring the art, maybe grabbing a glass of wine at the gallery restaurant.

For a night out, we’d visit a jazz bar where we could listen to live music, enjoy some poetry, and just vibe with the energy of the space. Toward the end of the week, we’d head to a spa in Vaughan for a relaxing day of massages and unwinding. Finally, I’d take them to a live performance or art show—Toronto is full of talented artists, and it would be the perfect way to end a memorable week.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to give a huge shout-out to my family. From the beginning of my journey, they may not have fully understood what I wanted to do, but they’ve always tried to help in the ways they could. I’m also incredibly grateful to my friends—not only for giving me courage but for reminding me that I’m capable of anything I put my mind to; they are a huge part of the success story I’m building. I want to thank everyone who’s offered me positive encouragement, including those whose names I may not know—those who came to my shows, supported my events, and shared kind words along the way. Most importantly, I’d like to thank myself for pushing through even when times got hard and the odds were against me. I’m also deeply thankful for the universe, nature, and my cat, Musa, who has been a steadfast source of emotional support through this journey. It’s not an easy path, but it’s definitely a rewarding one.
