We had the good fortune of connecting with Moey Blanco and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Moey, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe that risk is an essential part of life. I think that sometimes, playing it too safe can stagnate us. It dulls the spirit and the mind. This is where taking risks comes into play. It overrides our senses and revitalizes our taste for adventure. In this state I think we our able to access ideas of higher caliber and act with more fervor. It is true that by taking risks we can lose something, but it is also through risk that we can exponentially grow and gain more experiences.

Over the years, I’ve embarked on various ventures that carried an element of risk. From releasing entirely new products to diving into self-funded projects, each decision was a calculated gamble. And let’s not forget the bold move of leaving behind the security of a 9-5 job to pursue my passion full-time. These risks have become ingrained in my artistic process, shaping not only my work but also reinforcing my self-belief as an artist

It’s all about finding that delicate balance between calculated risk and staying true to one’s vision. While risks may come with the possibility of failure, they also offer the opportunity for growth and self-discovery. By staying rooted in my artistic integrity and embracing uncertainty, I’ve learned to trust in the journey, knowing each risk I take is an essential part of my growth.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a Filipino born artist who currently resides and creates in Calgary, Alberta. I have gained a reputation for my mischievous and playful characters set in metaphorical narratives. I draw inspiration from a diverse range of influences such as Japanese design, modern art and contemporary street art and design.

My art’s standout feature lies in it’s ability to maintain impact across diverse media. My current work embodies themes of freedom and self-expression, manifested through vibrant patterns, unique narratives and expressive characters. My current artistic process focuses on the pursuit of combining expressive colors and eye-catching gestural lines to capture motion within a limited space. I aim to engage my audience in a playful and joyful manner while still addressing thought-provoking themes such as, human consciousness, clever allegories and the resilience of the human spirit.

In the near future, I’m excited to explore my Filipino culture and find ways to combine by artistic process with it to develop a new set of work that reflects a deeper understanding of my roots, and therefore myself. I’m also excited to explore how I can better use my skills and education as an artist to help improve the quality of life for my community and the people around me.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Hike up some trails in Banff. Go for a float in the Bow River.
Have some pho at Pho Rang Dong or Pho Dau Bo
Burgers at Class Clown or Lil Empire
Drinks at Ol beautiful or Paper Lantern
