We had the good fortune of connecting with Momo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Momo, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born and raised in Japan to a Japanese mom and Ghanaian dad. My biracial background definitely had impact for me to be unique and different especially in Japanese society which loves to hammer down nails that stick out, I was obviously one of the nails at times, but as I became older I learnt to be brave and embrace who I was and stopped letting society hammer me down. And today, a lot of my art is about me expressing how great to be unique and different from the crowd and letting my true self out there for whoever came across my art.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is all about me. Yes it sounds ridiculous but that’s what is unique about my work. As I said, I am a biracial person who was born and raised in a racially homogeneous nation and struggled to find my identity growing up. A major theme of my work is the fusing and collaboration of things and qualities from different backgrounds.
When expressing myself, I believe that I cannot fully express myself with just one background, so I always try to show both sides in my art.
At DigiAnaStuduio, the organisation I belong to, our subject matter and theme is art that fuses and collaborates between futuristic digital elements and good old analogue elements, so we often fuse different types and qualities of art itself.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Of course after all the famous sightseeing spots, you should hangout in Williamsburg where all the it spots are at!
I of course adore some Japanese food so I would go to a sushi restaurant called Bozu which is a Japanese tapas bar on Grand street, they have tasty affordable menu with no MSG and great Sake selection! Their business just turned 20 years old recently.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First shoutout is to my parents for creating me this unique! haha But really, I learnt a lot about myself over the years and I truly thank god for my parents for raising me for the way they did and just the love they have for me. They are my biggest supporter in life.

Second shoutout is to Seungjin Lee a friend of mine who invited me to the art would at the first place. He scouted me to his organization DigiAna Group and showed me how he was passionated about art and let me join his journey which is how I started my career as a contemporary artist.
