We had the good fortune of connecting with Monece Starling and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Monece, is there something you believe many others might not?
Over time I’ve heard people say “you have to work nonstop in order to be successful” or that “if you are not struggling to make it you’re not working hard enough.” I don’t believe that to be true. There’s a time for everything. A time to rest, a time to work, and even a time to sit still. I believe in a mixture of strategically planning and setting goals. Success is the result of smaller accomplishments. You can work, but be intentional about it. And know what season you are in. Whether you have to sit still and take care of yourself or your family. It could be to plan without action. Or it could be to start implementing your plan of action. All in all don’t just work because you feel that’s what you need to do. Be purposeful with how you live.

What should our readers know about your business?
I have a Pie Baking Business where I specialize in pecan and sweet potato pies that will remind you of home. My pecan pies are made like no other. You will not find my version anywhere! My sweet potato pies are tasty as well. I’ve been told they have just the right amount of ingredients that’s not too much of this and not too much of that. I even take it another step with making different sizes for my pies. You can order a regular 9 inch pie called MoPies. My cupcake size pies called MoCups. And I have candy bite size pies called MoBites. I’ve been making pies for years and last year I decided to turn it into a real business. The business process wasn’t easy, because I was unfamiliar starting a business of any sort. So I did a lot of research and trial and error. It took me a while because the process seemed tedious. But I learned the first step is to start and to learn along the way. I’m open about my process to start a business. I believe in passing down knowledge to help the next person. Let’s all win together.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
LA has amazing views everywhere you go. If someone is visiting I’d take them out to see the views at one of the numerous hiking trails like Tangerine Falls. They have a waterfall. And Miramar Beach has a beautiful view and it’s peaceful. For food there’s a YouTube vlog called Mo Eats that I do where I talk about different restaurants. I’d visit places from there to start. Some of my favs are Hot and Juicy Crawfish, Menchies FroYo, Smokehouse on Main, and Pablitos Taco’s. LA also has some fun activities like escape rooms, day spas, and outdoor movies. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I always have to shoutout God with anything that I do, because without Him I wouldn’t be here. So I dedicate my life to Him. I’d also like to shoutout my parents James and Tammy for their love. I told them what I wanted to start my own business and they never discouraged me. So thank you!
