Meet Monet Dyson | State Worker & Entrepreneur

We had the good fortune of connecting with Monet Dyson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Monet, how do you think about risk?
How I think about risk is that you must take them in order to learn and grow. Life without risk means you’re not truly living from big risks to small risks. Taking risks has played a huge role in my life from my first interview for a job at 16 I decided to wear my hair in its natural state because I wanted to prove to my parents, I can get a job without straightening my hair. I know now they just wanted the best for me and were going off the era they were raised in, but I didn’t want to be anywhere that wouldn’t accept me for who I am. I ended up getting the job. Thats when I slowly began learning to lead with my gut and sometimes that required taking risks. Starting my business was a huge risk that I decided to bet on myself and take action. I didn’t know what I was doing but I knew I had to do it. I was a stay-at-home mom and didn’t have much money, but I figured it out along the way. I wouldn’t change anything because I have grown and learned a lot about business, myself, and being a mom.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My brand is called Dipped N Color in which was created to empower parents and children to connect and create through our paint kits and paint events. My brand and my art are about amplifying inclusivity, representation of healthy black and brown families, being yourself, loving yourself, and pouring into yourself as a creative individual. What I’m most proud of is how Dipped N Color has evolved into something way bigger than I initially imagined. I got to where I am today by not just giving up when it got hard and not just talking about what I wanted to achieve but taking action in order to achieve it. The challenges I overcame was trying to figure out how I wanted everyone to perceive my business and connecting all the ways I wanted to make an impact in a way that made sense. A lesson I learned is to stop holding myself back when doing something I’ve never done before. So, I had to have self-talks where I would just encourage myself and give myself grace because it’s something I’ve never done before and still doing it even if it seemed scary.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting my hometown Sacramento, CA and I wanted to show them the best time ever.
Over the span of seven days, we would visit a few coffee shops to eat breakfast and get some business done at Drip Expresso, Maestro Coffee shop, and Savvy House Coffee bar. For lunch and dinner, we would visit Daddy O’s Smokehouse, Q1227 restaurant, Oak Park brewery, and Momo’s meat market. For something sweet we would go to Sugar Coated Cupcakes, Conscious creamery, Bad Bakers, and Gunther’s. Things to do we would go to Her Elevated to attend a group training session, Saha Float Spa to relax in the water, get a massage, get our nails done, go to Night Market Series to support local businesses, Liaison Lounge to have a good time, hangout at Doco, get drinks at Revival at the sawyer, and a must when visiting Sacramento, the Tiger Lounge to enjoy night life.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I shoutout the man above for giving me this vision and helping me overcome unforeseen obstacles. My son for being an inspiration, a light, and motivating me to reach for higher goals. My family and friends who supported me along the way and have been rooting for me. They know who they’re, love you all. Brittany Claypool giving me the extra push I needed to host my first paint party and connecting me with Oak Park Brewery where I hosted my event. Rebecca Scott for being the biggest help setting up my first event, reassuring me when I felt like everything was going wrong, and just being all around the sweetest person. I am forever grateful. Isis Breanna who I had the opportunity to have a call with in which truly changed the trajectory of my business. From how I thought about it and its future. Which aligned with my passion. I thank her, the Six Figure Saint Conference, and podcast. Flourish media co. for picking me to win their grant at the Flourish Media Conference. Also inviting me to a huge event with many big names and full-time successful entrepreneurs. In which a lot looked like me and it made me feel like being a full-time successful entrepreneur is far more reachable than I initially thought. I am truly grateful for meeting them and the opportunities they gave me. A podcast that I listened to every morning for months was the Flourish Effect by Michelle Ana. It is a breath of fresh air and really helped shift my mindset. Melanie Espinoza for referring to this article, one of the best insta-mom friends I have. Lastly, I shout out myself for stepping out on faith and betting on myself.
