We had the good fortune of connecting with Monique Powers and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Monique, why did you pursue a creative career?
I was a legal secretary for many years and near my 30th birthday, I asked myself, “What do I want to do for the rest of my life?” I wasn’t happy as a legal secretary. I was very passionate about makeup and many people thought I was a makeup artist. So I decided to pursue makeup artistry as a career.. I immediately began honing my craft by practicing on anyone and everyone I could. I created a portfolio of “before” and “after” pictures and began advertising myself as a bridal makeup artist.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Because of the pandemic, I needed to create a safer working environment, so I pivoted how I conduct my business. I moved it into a beautiful, luxury mobile vehicle.  It is equipped with ventilation windows, a fan, HAC, and a private bathroom. I can now cater to individuals who are confined to working from home and/or don’t have a lot of time to travel for beauty services. New and existing client’s love that I can go to their home without going.into their home to perform their services..

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to thank and give a shoutout to the American Cancer Society (“ACS”) who unknowingly helped me to legitimize my career path.

My passion to beautify women of all ages, nationalities and skin types or conditions led me to contact the American Cancer Society so I could facilitate makeup lessons for the “Look Good, Feel Better” (“LGFB”) program. They respectfully declined my request because I did not have a cosmetology or esthetician license. So I immediately enrolled in beauty school, obtained my esthetician license and became a volunteer for the LGFB program. That desire to help cancer patients has changed my career forever. It prompted my to get licensed which has allowed me to open up two beauty studios to not only do makeup services but also facials, eyebrow and eyelash services as well.
