Meet Moon Yecca | Artist/Songwriter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Moon Yecca and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Moon, why did you pursue a creative career?
I started singing at a young age, but didn’t have a purpose behind it until I started writing my own songs, starting at 13 years old. Once I started writing my own songs, it was the greatest outlet for life’s troubles, triumphs, and everything in between.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My music story has taken me to some interesting places. I am labeled as an R&B artist; but most would never know I was actually in a rock band, I played the trumpet in middle school, and I even had a year performing as a drag king. All these opportunities… roads, if you will, always lead me to music. Being in a rock band, I learned how to adjust to bandmates and their styles. Performing as a drag king did wonders for my stage performance. This will be the first and last time I admit that I get stage fright. It’s not as bad now, and performing in drag helped with that. I was a character and in ways, masked my own true identity behind this character. Following my drag king adventures, I was able to carry on this ability to put on a show, as if I had a mask on, but instead, accepting and loving the character I am as an artist.
The amount of doors slammed in my face, the “No’s,” the rejection, it is not for the light hearted to deal with this constant reminder that “You’re not good enough.” Now I am at a point in my career where I literally don’t care anymore. Of course I want people to connect with my music, relate to my painful experiences, but it is just that now. I am so many things, and being a creator is just one of those labels. As a creator, it is my job to create, and so that is exactly where my drive comes from now. I create music and songs because of what I am going through, and it’s just a way to release the emotions, and hopefully inspire others that are going through similar experiences to keep going!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
That one is easy! For authentic Mexican food, I would take them to my favorite restaurant, “Los Tres Cochinitos” in Wilmington, CA. We would go have drinks at my favorite little hole-in-the-wall bar, “The Stache,” in Long Beach. For good live music, we would visit “Black Rabbit Rose,” in Hollywood. Anyone can take you to the highlighted tourist attractions that major cities are known for, but from my most recent experience visiting New York, you don’t really get to experience those places unless you party with the people. I had a blast in Manhattan, however, we were surrounded by other people just like us; tourists. It wasn’t until we visited Brooklyn, specifically the Williamsburg neighborhood, did we truly get the NY experience. You could feel the culture, and definitely catch the vibe.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My sons Larenzo and Maurice. I know it might be cliche to some, but they are the real reason I get up and fight everyday, in every aspect of my life. After having my sons, I thought my music opportunities were over. However, when I realized my sons’ started having dreams of their own, how was I going to encourage them and tell them to reach for the stars, and never stop fighting for your dream, if I, myself, gave up on my own dreams. There are countless times I want to give up, but I look at them, and shrug it off and say to myself “No. You gotta keep going. They are watching.”
