We had the good fortune of connecting with Morgan Bonn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Morgan, how do you think about risk?
Someone told me a long time ago, “you have to spend money to make money,” and I think that is 100% true. Starting a business is financially risky – especially when you know that almost 50% of small businesses fail within the first 5 years. I knew the risks associated with starting Cloud 9, and yet I knew it was worth it. I began the process of starting my business at 20 years old + I had investors, so the risk was not just that of my own – there was much more at stake. But I believed in me, my family, friends, and investors believed in me, and the risk was worth the reward. This summer, we will pass our 5-year benchmark for being in business and I am so thankful we made it this far. We are continually growing, offering more services, expanding our repertoire, and learning as we go. I can’t wait to see what’s next!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Cloud 9 Coffee Company started as a renovated travel trailer back in 2017. Our trailer the first of it’s kind in California, and one of the first in the US. Since then, we have opened a beautiful brick + mortar location in central Bakersfield that offers incredible specialty coffee, unique signature drinks, local baked goods, and literally the best vibes in town. I am proud to say that we literally started from the bottom, and have blossomed to a beautiful, thriving company that supports the community. Though, our journey wasn’t easy. From being founded by a 20-year-old with zero business experience, to the disaster that is Covid, we have persevered and are so thankful to still be around.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would start off by visiting New Vintage Grill, down the street from my house. The owners are so sweet, and I love their food. After that, as I am an ice cream fanatic, we would have to hit up Dewar’s for dessert.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I owe all success past, present, and future, to God. This little cafe of mine wouldn’t exist without His provision.

Secondarily, my mom, Joy, is always there to bounce ideas off of, be a shoulder to cry on, and celebrate even the tiniest victories. And my husband, Carter, has been a rock to me since the day I met him. I love you both!
