We had the good fortune of connecting with Nati Chang and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nati, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking risks is the only reason I am where I am. And a lot of that risk came from just having faith that my intuition will never prove me wrong (some may say to a fault). My biggest fear is regret. I’d rather know I answered all my curiosities, failure or not, than to wonder forever. Plus, every failure redirected me to where I was supposed to be.
There has been a few instances where I knew it was time to quit a job. Without much planning, I took risks despite everybody advising me not to. In hindsight, it was a little crazy but I don’t regret any of it.
First it was a job in freelance makeup work. Then 1 risk led to becoming a makeup art/beauty influencer. After 2 years, I decided to drop everything and learn how to tattoo – back to square one.
Today, I am living a life I’ve dreamt of for a long time. And none of it would be possible without each leap of faith.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I want my art to make people think. When I started doing makeup, I started to learn that I was an abstract artist. I loved to play with the idea of using my face as a canvas instead of being restricted to how makeup has been used for many years. Sometimes I like to make my looks loud, and other times I like to make them minimal but effective. Every piece, stroke, and color has a purpose and it’s meant to make people wonder. I’m now exploring that with my tattoos as well. It’s fun bringing my designs to life, forever.
Getting to where I am today was HARD. It was all very necessary for my growth today. But I would like to not experienced that hardship again :).
But that’s why I’m so proud of my life and accomplishments. I proved to many people AND myself that I am 100% capable.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is hard because I’m a home-body. But if I had to, the first restaurant I’d take my friend is Crown Shy in FiDi – one word…”DELICIOUS.”
I’d also go to DUMBO and hangout by the park and go shopping. Central Park, Dover Street Market for some shopping, SOHO for some cute pictures, then 101 Wilson for some fun at night.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My boyfriend, Armando. He’s seen me in all my failure and successes and has always encouraged me to keep going,.
He’s the person that pushed me to start my social media journey. He’s also the person that encouraged me to start tattooing as well.
