We had the good fortune of connecting with Morgan Newson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Morgan, what inspires you?
Inspiration can come from many different sources. My inspiration to continue flourishing in my small business “Ka’Bree’s Photography” is based on my relationship with Christ, family, friends, and community. My goal as a photographer is to capture someone’s beauty, allowing them to embrace all their features. While being a Christian and finding who I am in God, I’ve learned to embrace what we many see as our flaws. I believe that we are all each uniquely made in Christ. I’ve noticed that sometimes people may ask me to edit out their acne or make drastic changes to their appearance. I try to steer away from making drastic edits and allow the person in front of the camera to see themselves through a different lens—a lens of beauty and security in their looks.

For as long as I can remember, my family has documented our lives story through pictures. My grandma’s house is full of pictures representing an important moment in her children’s and grandchildren’s lives. Walking through her house and reminiscing on certain moments from these images inspires me to document my community through photos.

My friends and community play an essential role as well. About two years ago, I created the KP team. This team is full of creative minds and models, mainly from Los Angeles. They have allowed me to bring my concepts to life. They have trusted me to showcase their uniqueness and beauty within our community. Every day, they continually inspire me by sending ideas we can work on for photoshoots and overall they provide support. Inspiration doesn’t have to just come from one place; we can find inspiration to reach our goals all around us. To stay inspired, we have to be willing to learn from others.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Moving forward as a small business owner, I’m mostly excited to see my growth within the next few years. My goal as an artist is first to continue to receive my education from Spelman College as an art major. Once I’ve graduated and received my Bachelor’s degree, I want to pursue the career of becoming an Art Director working with Disney or Pixar. After I reach my goal within my career, I would like to open a Museum in Los Angeles showcasing the work I’ve completed in photography over the years featuring the work of other artists from young children and adults within my community. This museum will be a safe space for creatives to continually pursue their passions and network with others to flourish in their careers. I want to make sure that I pay it forward. The one important thing I’ve learned as a business owner is that we must stick together and help each other reach our goals.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had one week to take my best friend to some of my favorite places in LA. We would mostly go to restaurants. I would take them to In N Out which is a burger spot that is not found in many other states. I would also take them to JAMS which is a black owned ice cream shop located in Inglewood. We would also go to The Coffee Co, M&M’s Soul Food, Randy’s Donut Shop, Trejos Tacos, and many more.

For places to have some fun or get out for the day we would go to Knott’s Berry Farm, Disney Land/California Adventure, Universal Studios, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Aquarium of the Pacific, Ragging Waters, Six Flags, or to a Lakers Game.

These are just a few of some of my favorite eateries and places but I think the previously listed spots would be the best for someone to attend if this was their first time visiting.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a special thank you to God for keeping me grounded throughout this process of creating a business and for providing me with the opportunity to create a space where others can learn to love themselves. I would also like to thank my family and the KP team. I appreciate you all for supporting me on this journey of creativity. I love that you all encourage the concepts that I have for photoshoots, and you come prepared to help bring the vision to life. Thank you, especially to my immediate family, for providing me with the resources to create my small business. I am so grateful for your prayers and support. Lastly, I would like to thank anyone who has shared advice and encouragement. Thank you to those who have advocated for my business, whether you have shared my work with others or left heartfelt comments.
