We had the good fortune of connecting with Toushonta Hogan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Toushonta, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?

I remember being married while running a business and in school with two young children, 2 years apart and sacrificing my entire life for each of them . So much so that celebrating me felt like guilt. I felt unworthy, as my children were my world. But, my world, my life was dying inside. From the hustle and bustle of my day to day schedule, coupled with the extra-curricular activities that each of my children were participants of, along with the need to maintain my relationship with my husband. I began to feel overwhelmed. My love for dressing in cute fashionable clothes sooned turned into grey sweats and an oversized white T-shirt. The housework was endless and spending time with my husband was far and few in between. I was failing at “motherhood” Before I knew it depression began to seep in. I lost Faith, Hope and Joy but most importantly, I lost myself!!

Tapping into my emotions was something I wasn’t taught but rather ridiculed when growing up. Being strong was all I knew until one day I came face to face with my weakness. It was during this time where I saw my strength. Creativity had always been a passion of mine, but I had set it aside because I was in “Mommy Mode” and felt I was robbing my children of their time. At least so I thought. After taking a few soap classes and researching essential oils and fragrances, I started Scentsational Soaps. Scentsational Soaps saved my life and revived me from existing to living. I’ve freed myself from thinking that I don’t deserve the finer things to KNOWING that I deserve ALL THE THINGS. It has allowed me to slow down and breathe, while inhaling unique fragrances that encourages self appreciation, adoration and love. My children are now older, and they have been watching me from afar. I’m grateful to have taken the time to invest in myself and learn more about self discovery. It has allowed me to transfer my knowledge to my children, while allowing them to understand that life is an endless process of self discovery.

Scentsational Soaps has also allowed me to add a little razzle dazzle within my marriage by way of our men’s collection that promotes sensual and bold fragrances for the confident man. My sweats and oversized T-shirts are now a thing of the past. Whereas, cute, sexy and fashionable clothing are now my jam. My business is a daily reminder that I must continue to climax to my best life ever. I deserve it & so do YOU!!!!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I was born a creative and didn’t really tap into it until my early thirties. For years, I thought being creative wasn’t good enough. It wasn’t until I took a soap class and received my first wholesale order from a store at the Topanga Plaza mall when I saw the potential in what could be, if I stuck with it. That initial wholesale order was a complete disaster. The order totaled $2500 and she made a deposit for half the amount. As I began making the soap I made a HUGE error where the soap exploded out of the mold. When making soap using the cold process method, it’s imperative to make sure the lye water cools down before mixing it with the oils. Did I do that? Not at all. I mixed it while it was hot and after pouring it into the mold, the soap began to escape out of the mold like a volcano. I had to reorder the essentials oils which pushed my delivery date back even longer. But, I did not give up. This was challenge number one of many. A challenge that I would never forget, yet so grateful it happened to allow me to get stronger and better. I took two more classes after this episode and continued to practice and practice over and over. Even today, I’m still learning new techniques as I enjoy challenging myself as well as creating unique and beautiful products which has led me to start another creative business.
During the pandemic, in 2020 I started “Toushonta Creates” Toushonta Creates mission is to build and activate minds with creativity, ingenuity, and originality while giving them the skills & confidence needed to execute their goals immediately. From learning to take product photos using their cells phones to cooking fun recipes and learning about healthy options for your body. Toushonta Creates embodies each of these pillars as this is my life daily.

Whatever your desire within this life, be open to who and what you are designed to do as the doors will open widely when you embrace your gift.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I have a few favorite spots. So, if you’re a hiker like myself, I’d say head over to the Baldwin Scenic Overlook and head to the top. Park above and hike along the backside. It will take you over to Kenneth Hahn Park over the bridge with a great quiet and beautiful walk. I usually try to walk at least 3-4 miles when going. It”s a great way to get the day started. Afterwards, I would head to Lady Bird Cafe in Echo Park. It’s a cute and beautiful cafe with lots of attention to detail. It’s located within a residential neighborhood with a beautiful atmosphere outside. The food is delicious and the ambiance is very relaxing. Our next stop would be to go to the Glendale Galleria to do a lil shopping while heading over to Americana which is directly across the street. I love this mall. It has everything I need and more. There are places to eat and drink as well. I enjoy unique experiences and definitely love nature! Another place I would recommend would be the Arboretum. It’s a beautiful botanical garden filled with peacocks and butterflies, ducks and gorgeous ponds throughout. My all time favorite place to go for dinner is L.A. Prime in downtown Los Angeles. The best views at night (especially when the sun is setting) and great food and drinks. Ask for Norma (my favorite waitress) if you decide to go. You’ll love her!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Yes, most definitely!!! I want to shout out my family, to include my husband, Kevin Hogan who saw my gifts and talents long before I did. My mother; Rochelle Davis who has been my number one cheer-leader since day one, My children; Devin & Shaiann Hogan who pushed me beyond imagination as I wanted to be the best example to them in all that I do. Although a pain in my butt, I want to thank my brothers James Massengale Jr. and Gregory Matta Jr. for your support over the years.  I have always believed, when in business, it’s a must to have a mentor / coach as you should never pretend to know everything. I’m grateful for my mentor; Tamara Zantell of Raising A Mogul who continuously challenges me to think outside the box and level up in both my personal and business life. Thank you. Terri King Hunt of Terri Teaches who has helped me tremendously…….I love you girl!!! Thanks for your love and support in helping my children on projects as well as myself in business. Thanks so Simply Wholesome Health Food Store for giving me an opportunity to be the first to launch my products at your location over 8 years ago as well as Candance Simmons of All That & More Boutique. With so much happening in the world, managing my mental space has been priority. I’d like to shout out George J Valle and Doriann Quinonez of Zero Givens (my gym, my second home) for embracing me and shifting my mindset and my body. I love you both!!!
