We had the good fortune of connecting with Muge Li and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Muge, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I like to express my thoughts through art. I really enjoy the process of creating them. Catching the ideas in my head and making them into an illustration is a wonderful feeling for me. I love telling a story in one illustration, but I also love to write my own stories and make them into a series of illustrations, such as picture books. I am especially fond of humorous quirky characters and imaginary stories. I want to bring people joy and cheerful through my illustrations. And I also want to let my picture books light children’s childhood and build a connection between children and parents. That’s why it is a such meaningful work for me.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
At first I just liked drawing, but I was not sure what exactly things and style I wanted to draw. I start to follow my heart and just let me draw, in the most comfortable way. I did not force myself to draw anything that I don’t want to draw. I start to know about myself. I found that I like drawing kids and animals and I like humorous characters and fantasy stories. My style starts to appear. It is a unique voice that belongs to me. I think that finding your own voice is the most important for every artist, even every person. The meaning of drawing for me is also a path to finding myself.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I will introduce them to the art museums in NYC, after all, there are a lot in NYC. I would also like to take them to restaurants, perhaps some places I have never been before, because I like to try new things. Then I will take them to a beach and lie there for a whole day.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I really appreciate my parents who give me full support to become an artist. Even sometimes, they don’t understand what I am doing. And I also appreciate my professors and friends, they encourage me and give me faith when I doubt myself.
