We had the good fortune of connecting with Nadia Calhoun Redd and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nadia, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
For me my business began with my organic and original gifts. I’ve tried everything you can name and i’m gifted in almost every area so for me getting back to my original gifts was a huge part of my thought process. Doing what i love to do effortlessly. And with getting back to that my thought process has always been “Turning my pain into positive!” So anything that i endured when it came to starting my business which is me being an Author, Writer and Producer…i’ve always been big on putting everything ive went through in life on paper. Whether it was a song, script, play or poem.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
All of my friends, family and supporters know me as an individual who wear many hats! I’m a creative all around. I sing, dance, act and also love to beautify anyone with makeup or hair. I also have a ministry with the youth encouraging them in a loving way while still being able to get through to them. But my true calling and dreams lies in me being an Author, Writer and Producer. It has took me a very long journey with soul searching to get to this point and it was not very easy. I’ve went through many stages of depression, but that turned me into who i am today. Finding who you are and what your true calling doesn’t come overnight without mentorship and guidance. I went through artist development, watched hundreds of mentoring videos, sermons and kept my spiritual relationship with God as top priority. I had to first get into a place overall to change my mindset. Growing up in Detroit your in the midst of the struggle everyday, things you learn and are adapted to sometimes stick with you forever. I have never been a follower so making the decision to change toxic behavior and environments was a tad bit hard but was a easy transition once i put my mind to it. Sometimes i had to isolate myself from the world just to think, brainstorm, pray to God and manifest. It took me making sacrifices of not hanging out with family or friends to put the time into my craft. It took me major money management skills being able to invest into my book or film project if i wanted it to look really professional and presentable. It took me dark days and nights risking my marriage from time i had to put into my projects instead of focusing more on my love life. It was very stressful as well when i finally became a mother to my beautiful son, so with that i had to also find balance. I had to get to a different place and recreate Nadia and that came with the people around me respecting who i am, but most importantly respecting my boundaries and dreams. Its really simple! If you really want something, you would do anything to go get it. I got tired of begging people in the industry to show me the way, so i made a decision to become that person who show everyone else the way! I began to do my own research and asked God to place people in my life who wouldn’t mind helping me get there. I didn’t want anybody in my life who was going to distract me, who was going to push me to do anything other than what Nadia wanted to do. That happened to me growing up, i lived my life doing what made others happy all the time. You have to be true to yourself every hour on the hour. Never fall into anybody elses dreams. Behind my brand is everything that i am, nothing is made up or created from a marketing team to make it look good. I Believe Productions is and will be all that i am!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love nature! Riding bikes, sitting by the water and nature walks are bomb. So that is what we would do during the day. I also love the ideas of museums, the history behind it and just learning new things. But of course we would have to eat and i love seafood and soulfood spots. Overall renting an airbnb near the bike trail by Lake Huron, Motown Museum, African American Museum, Henry Ford Museum, Toni Treats & Good Eats food truck Pho Crab Restaurant, Townhouse Downtown Detroit. Also if my bestfriend wants a little more adventure we will do a boat ride and maybe a day at CJ Barrymore and Top Golf in Auburn Hills.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost Jesus Christ my lord and savior. His guidance , grace and forgiveness during my journey has been the reason why i am able to continue! But i give my gratitude to my parents if it wasn’t an unique story as to how i came into this world i wouldn’t even have a story or be the person i am today if it wasn’t for my mother and father! I didn’t agree with them on alot of things growing up when it came to me wanting to follow all of my dreams. But i know now that they were trying to protect me from this cruel world and i’ve learned during this journey that everything happens in Gods timing not ours.
