We had the good fortune of connecting with Nadiia Fokova and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nadiia, how do you think about risk?
Emigrating with two children, a disabled husband, a dog and a cat. Isn’t this a risk? But we decided to take this step. And we have never regretted it. Yes it was difficult. And there are still many challenges ahead. But we are ready for them.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My name is Olivia Fokova. I am an actress and model. I started acting at the age of 3. Initially, it was a family YouTube channel with children’s songs. Later, I did commercial shoots for clothing stores and fashion shows. My last shoot in Ukraine was on the eve of the war, February 22, 2022, in Kyiv. I enjoy being a model. It is an interesting job. I like that the shooting locations are always different, and I get to meet new people. My mom completed an online school program in Los Angeles called Mom Manager, which greatly helped my development. It helped me find an agent and sign contracts with talent and modeling agencies.

Was it easy? Of course not. It requires time and effort. You have to audition thousands of times, and only a small portion of them will respond. The first and most important lesson is that you need to learn any profession, no matter how easy it may seem from the outside. Start anything with learning. Take steps every day, even if they seem very small, but take them every day. Over time, you will see your results. Even if you have no time, money, or health, dedicate 25 minutes a day to your favorite activity. You will see changes in a month, then in six months, and then in a year. Take action.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite places are amusement parks. Disneyland, Universal Studios. I also love water parks and zoos. I love water and the ocean. I enjoy spending my free time on the beach. Swimming in the ocean. And when it’s cold I go to the YMCA pool.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Our family came from Ukraine in 2022, on the 40th day of the war. We are very grateful to all the people who helped us on this difficult journey from Ukraine to the United States. We are thankful to the volunteers who brought us to the Romanian border, and to those who assisted us at the borders of Romania and Mexico, providing us with food and free accommodation. We are grateful to the airline captain who allowed us to bring our dog and cat on the flight, even though the airline had prohibited it, and who also fed us for free. We are thankful to the US government for opening its borders to us and accepting us. We are also grateful to the people who provided us with free housing for two weeks in Santa Monica, and later in West Los Angeles. We are thankful to Trinet for taking our children into a summer camp for the entire season, and to our school PS-1. We are grateful that the father of our family was treated for cancer when he had a recurrence in the United States. We are thankful to the people who bravely became co-signers for us to rent our first apartment, and to the Baptist church that helped us pay the rent. We are grateful to the volunteer organizations, as well as to our parents and to God for guiding us to the United States.
