We had the good fortune of connecting with Necoya Tyson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Necoya, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I started my business back 2009, I was working for an association that was going through budget cuts and layoffs. It was a bad time across the nation. I saw friends and family losing their jobs left & right. At that time, I was a new employee of the organization, so I thought that at any given moment, I’d be next to get laid off. So I started doing research and studying the events industry and that’s how All About You Event Management was born!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m the owner of All About You Event Management, a wedding & event planning firm based in the Washington DC metro area, however we have offices throughout the United States. I’m also the creator of Mornings are for Mimosas, a networking event for those in the events industry. And I recently created a festival called Mimosa Fest which will be held in Austin, TX in 2022.
I’ve been in business for 12 years and some days I wish it was easy, but it’s not. But I enjoy every minute of it! I’ve overcome challenges as an entrepreneur by leaning on the my industry friends and my mentor but by also just pushing through the tough times.
Some lessons that I’ve learned along the way are:
-It’s okay to not be okay. Take the time to take care of you and get help where and when you need it!
-Being organized will help you go a long way
-Invest in yourself/your education to become an expert in your field
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh wow! If my best friend was visiting, we’d definitely be hanging out downtown. I’d take her to L.A. Live as she’d get a lot of her L.A experiences there. I remember running into Freddie Prinze, Jr. at the Starbucks down there and I was so excited! I’d show her all of the hot spots to eat and just walk around and people watch. I’d most definitely take her to Venice Beach. I’m a water lover we’d definitely spend a day there.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mentor B. Murphy deserves so much credit for my amazing journey in the events industry. He has been supportive, encouraging and extremely helpful as I’ve grown during this time.
