We had the good fortune of connecting with Nakia Brantley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nakia, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I love how you can take a blank space, an empty room or venue and transform it into something completely different by using your imagination. I have always been the go to person in our family when it came to decorating. A few years ago I decorated my own anniversary party and all of my guests kept urging me to widen out and start decorating for people outside of our family. I started researching opportunities for education in the event decor industry and became an Accredited Event Designer.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I provide design and decor for events such as weddings, showers, parties. I start with a clients vision or inspiration pictures and add a touch of imagination to their events. I have learned that you can’t compare yourself to others in the event industry. You will never truly be able to duplicate someone else’s work. Being myself and designing beautiful events brings me so much joy. Every event is different even if two clients decide on the same theme.. The opportunity to design and create a space that helps contribute to making memories is special to me.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have been a resident of Vallejo for four years and honestly need to explore the city myself. We could go to Downtown Vallejo and visit a couple of antique and thrift shops. We could walk along the waterfront. We could catch a Ferry to San Francisco and tour the Embarcadero.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband Mike has been my motivator and my sounding board. He is my biggest supporter and pushes me to continue to push my self, look for education opportunities and step out of my comfort zone. My brother Clifford is an inspiration to me. He owns a clothing brand called Cold World 4863. He showed me how you have to believe in yourself and your brand. He has showed me that even when it seems that no one is watching that you keep going and improving.
