We had the good fortune of connecting with Nia Fairweather and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nia, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
I have a list of quotes and affirmations and lean on at any given time. In this moment, two come to mind: “I am Another of Yourself” – Mayan Proverb While this wording is attributed to the Mayans, this Universal truth is echoed throughout many Indigenous cultures and Ancient practices. If there is one ancient practice/moral Law I would like to reinstate, this would be the one. I firmly believe that we [human beings] are interconnected and what one does affects the others. If everyone lived and acted from the understanding that others are an extension of themselves, many of the harmful ways of beings, oppressive systems, devastation of the planet and destructive actions linked to racism would cease to exist. “I awaken to beauty, live in elegance and become art.” – Ancient Eygptian (Kemetic) Affirmation Awakening to beauty is ‘beauty’ with a big “B”. The Beauty of Nature, all living things seen and unseen. It acknowledges the totality of what comprises the Present moment. “Live in Elegance” speaks to the Love and Compassion that comes with embracing all of who we are; the experiences that fortified us, our unique perspective and the Vision only I/you can fulfill. As we awaken to the Beauty and Live in Elegance, we enter a space of Gratitude and Reverence for who we are Becoming. Everytime I utter these words, I’m reminded that my Life is a masterpiece in progress. It touches me on a Soul level… Awaken, Live and Become! Ase.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m an award-winning Actress known for the emotional range, authenticity and unique perspective I bring to each role/project. Being first-generation American, I was raised with an immense appreciation for my Caribbean heritage and the limitless possibilities of growing up in East Flatbush (Brooklyn in the house!), New York afforded me. At an early age, the various accents and languages spoken in my home and neighborhood led to my fascination of different cultures and human behavior. My curious nature has led me on the bountiful journey of telling stories as an Actress-Writer-Producer; Artist. I overstand what’s at stake for the Directors, Producers and Creatives I work with and take great pride that my dedication to my craft has allowed them to create with ease knowing that the character/story they’ve entrusted me with is in great hands. Exploring the unknown, fostering deep-connections with my collaborators and discovering new things about the human condition is my jam. I absolutely love what I do! And, I give thanks for each opportunity I’m able to use my cultivated skills to help others make their story, vision or idea a reality! Currently, ‘A New York Christmas Wedding’, a feature film in which I am the Leading Lady is streaming on Netflix, ‘Four Seasons’ a short film I wrote and produced recently won the Director’s Choice Award and Best Score at Diversity in Cannes. I’m in the process of developing the episodic series expansion of Four Seasons and leaving space for new ideas and opportunities to come in!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When loved ones come to town, my first stop is somewhere on the coast; in or near Nature. My close proximity to the ocean and hiking trails is one of the things I enjoy most about living in Los Angeles. My go-tos would be: Culver City stairs (gotta give them the LA “stair workout” experience), Griffith Park, Lower Arroyo Park, Eaton Canyon Falls Trail and/or Los Liones Trailhead. I live a plant based lifestyle and taking them to one of my favorite eateries would be next. Depending on what part of town we are in, you would find us at: Shojin (Culver City), Sage Plant Bistro (Culver City), Cafe Gratitude (Larchmont), Gracia Madres (West Hollywood), Simply Wholesome (Ladera Heights) or Harun Coffee (Leimert Park). While in Leimert Park, going to Nappily Naturals Apothecary and Eso Won Books is an absolute must! If they are up for the drive, I would take them to Terranea Resort for an early dinner and have tea on the beach at sunset. Afterwards, head back to my house for more quality time in pajamas, over a fresh cup of Earl Grey, Chamomile or Peppermint tea from The Conservatory for Coffee, Tea & Cocoa (Culver City) [sidebar: we are some tea drinking peoples!!] which I keep a stock of in my pantry and possibly dessert from Erin McKenna’s Bakery (Santa Monica).
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We would need a month long retreat in order for me to shout out ALL of the people who have aided in my development and success! As I write this, it is the birthday of Jerome Smith, a dear friend, older brother figure and loved one of mine who passed away suddenly many years ago. I started sculpting in high-school and he was one of the first people who helped me to realize that I was an Artist. He exposed me to different art forms, films and music as well as shared works of his own. He worked at night so he could pursue his passion by day and was very active in his church community. His dedication to following his dream(s) and helping others had a lasting impact on me; and served as an example of what goodness looks like in action. He was and still is one of the most generous and kind hearted Souls I’ve had the pleasure of sharing this life with. While he didn’t get to see my evolution from a Fine Artist to Actress-Writer-Producer, I wholeheartedly give thanks for the role he played in my life because many of the things I learned from and discovered alongside him are the foundation I live by and create from to this day. I named my production company Smith&Grace, so that each time I utter the name [Smith] it was an homage to him. There isn’t a day or opportunity that passes without me drawing on the generosity he and countless others poured into me over the years. My commitment to being true to who I am as a person and Artist in all that I do, is not only in honor of my Purpose but in Reverence of the baton that those who came before me have entrusted me with.
