Meet Nicholas Webster | Artist, Producer, and Sound Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicholas Webster and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicholas, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
I’ve learned over the course of my sound design career that generally people have no idea what a sound designer even does. Music is very easy for people to understand, and often I’m doing that too. But when it comes to sound design, both in film and theatre, its much more mysterious for some reason. I think it’s because good design is sometimes just functional, blending it in so no one notices it working.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In my music, I’m very drawn to a DIY aesthetic. Among many, the blog house era of electronic music is huge source of inspiration, where songs are not pristine or flawless but individual and human, even in the context of digital synths and drum machines. I think when those raw attributes conflict with a medium where sounds are digital and inherently ‘perfect’, a lot of interesting things are born. I try to keep that close to me when making music.
In sound design, I believe I harbour a very nice niche of work. I have a solid musical background which is a huge plus, but also working in both theatre and film has informed each other and given me a unique ear in both mediums. Sometimes theatre wants to feel slightly cinematic and sometimes film needs a level of theatricality, so I feel I am able to bring those attributes to one another.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Basically the only thing I like to do is eat and drink, so I would construct the perfect itinerary to cover as much ground in LA as possible. I would prioritize the most “Los Angeles” of the spots of my list, and among the top would be Guelaguetza for their cosmic mole experience, Mini Kabob for juicy, succulent, and expert kabob craftsmanship, Park’s BBQ for an extraordinary banquet of meat, soup, and most imporantly stew, Apple Pan for a one of a kind burger and an atmosphere to match and Tiki Ti because I have not been but God I want to.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Emily, of Earth to Emily fame, is my close friend and a fellow artist. She has always encouraged me and inspired me, both intentionally in our conversations over the years and unitentionally by witnessing her pursuit of success with determination and ease. She has a singular vision in her music and brand and is one of the hardest working people I know. Also my mom.
