We had the good fortune of connecting with Nick Samson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nick, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think risk sort of comes with the territory on our journey through life, especially for artists. We’re always putting ourselves out there without really knowing for sure how people will react. We create something and hope it’s greeted with understanding, or at the very least, we force someone to think deeper about what it is we’re presenting.

Anytime I release a song, or I’m acting, I know I’m vulnerable to multiple outcomes. If we’re really putting all of our heart and soul into something though, it’s not really a risk, is it? We know we’ve given it our all. I think authenticity and risk can be easily misconstrued. If you truly believe in what you’re doing, no matter what your line of work is, hopefully you can find peace with whatever the results may be.

I’ve by no means mastered this frame of thought and I constantly have to remind myself. I’m working hard to be myself and follow my dreams. The real risk is not following my gut and not being true to who I am and what story I want to tell.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m really excited about this upcoming year. Anything beats 2020 right? I know 2021 won’t be without its bumps, but I feel really lucky to still be here creating and doing what I love. It’s been a long journey from my days growing up in Cleveland, OH. I ended up in Columbus for college, and that time helped shape myself as a person and artist.

It’s not been easy, especially since my love to Los Angeles in November 2019, right before the pandemic. There were times when I thought I wasn’t meant to be here. Maybe the universe was trying to tell me to turn back around? Yet, I used this time to write the best music I’ve written and I can’t wait to share it with everyone on my debut EP. I’ve also discovered more deeply who I am as a songwriter.

My music project La Poré has allowed me the ability to express my deepest anxieties, hopes, and dreams. I’m able to lose myself and create a persona I guess that embodies my longing to pour my heart out, to be understood, and how this battles with my many insecurities.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Now that the world has opened up a bit more, I’ve had the pleasure of hosting some friends and family the past few weeks. I usually start out by taking them to Griffith Park. I still can’t get over the views there. You have to enter via Lake Hollywood though, because it’s almost directly under the sign and there’s always street parking available.

Then after we get our steps in, we’ll reward ourselves with some Pablitos in North Hollywood. I always go with the Chile Relleno. It’s by far the best burrito I’ve ever had.

I don’t get to the beach nearly as much as I would like to in my own free time, so I would absolutely take them. Also a drive to Malibu is a must. Again the view of the mountains on the drive are breathtaking, and the ride down the PCH never gets old. I’m still discovering the city myself, since most of my time living in LA has been under quarantine, so I’m on the look out for more go to spots.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate a shoutout to my wife and collaborator Dani Michaux Samson. Dani is a painter, mixed media, and collage artist whose work focuses on the relationship between our living space and our physical, mental, and emotional experience of it. A few months after we moved to Los Angeles, Dani formed her business Calico Flower Studio, which everyone should check out!

She’s created artwork for my last several song releases, and most recently we joined forces on my latest single “Love Song,” which was accompanied by a stop motion animation video created by Dani. She’s constantly inspiring me with her work and I’m so excited about everything she’s doing. We support each other in our respective practices, and of course in our life partnership. It’s a really special thing.
