We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicole Burgess and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nicole, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I thought I had a unique perspective on floral design and I was burnt out in fashion. My husband works in film and he’s gone several months of the year so I need a job that has flexibility in allowing me to travel with my kids to visit him. I will say having your own business is very stressful!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a bespoke floral designer specializing in branded events, weddings, parties and local deliveries. My passion in styling home interiors and doing home subscriptions. That basically entails going into someone’s living space and curating the flowers to enhance the space. I think people underestimate how bringing the outside in can enhance and transform an interior. I think I always have an element of surprise in my design whether that be texture or form, even colors one may not group together.
I love making sculptural floral art. I’m most proud of the fact that I have slowly built the business. However the lost challenging this was pivoting during Covid and also keeping consistency in building all aspects of the business. The growing pains are really learning to value your time and work by not lowering my standards to meet clients sometimes unrealistic expectations. keeping profit margins high is hard in this business. People just often are not aware how much flowers actually cost.
I think I just want people to know about my passion for what I do and know that I put 110% into my work which often means missing out inn family/kids events and special times.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well I’m biased but I think the palisades is one of the most idyllic towns in Los Angeles. I would definitely do a day in malibu check out malibu farm and shop the country mart. I would probably head up to Santa ynez for 1 night because it’s so close and wine taste. We belong to the beach club I would definitely take someone there it’s a pretty special place especially for children. I would do a dinner at Felix and walk around abbot Kinney for sure. I think it’s cool to see Beverly Hills. A lunch at the polo lounge and the Beverly Hills Hotel is always a must. Great people watching! I also love a martini and apps at Tower bar on Sunset. Also great people watching. Larchmont village is also super cute. I’m very partial to the Westside though, it’s very hard to get me East. I would actually love to push myself and the family to explore more of LA on the weekends in the upcoming months. I’ve actually been dying to go back to the Fairfax flea market. I love a good vintage find for fashion and furniture.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Probably my husband who has always encouraged me to follow my dreams.
