We had the good fortune of connecting with Nikkita Weerasinghe and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nikkita, career-wise, where do you want to be in the end?
I’ve been fortunate to have organically stumbled upon my purpose and it just so happens to be my passion. So my end goal is simple…to share it and evolve as I go. At the end of my career I would love to have created a fitness community that not only provides in person group fitness class but also offers online classes, teacher trainings and retreats. Eventually I would like to franchise my brand.
What should our readers know about your business?
This is a big one. Well I am a nurse turned Pilates instructor/business owner turned promoter of mindful movement/ entrepreneur and who knows what’s next except that there will always be a what’s next. I opened my little studio as a traditional Pilates studio under a franchise. I quickly realised I was growing out of the franchise and didn’t agree with their vision. I simply wanted more and wanted to give more. So I left the franchise and created not only a brand but a trademarked fitness modality that would define what we do in my studio. The difference is simple. Pilates is all about breath and integrity of movement so we don’t have to be confined to equipment or routines in order to practice Pilates…that’s how “Fitlates” was created. In my studio my clients never take the same class twice, they’ll never even listen to the same playlist twice. Myself and my team strive to create an experience from start to finish, the foundation being breath and integrity of movement while also creating variety not just in exercises but in equipment use and types of movements. We teach yoga, HIIT, Tabatas, circuits in addition to Pilates. All with the goal of empowering our clients. As far as being a business owner/entrepreneur well, it’s an adventure. One minute I’m pulling my horse out of quicksand and then next I’m riding victoriously on a dragon but at least it’s MY adventure. I get to try new things, I get to learn new lessons and I get to build more connections. As far as my brand, it’s about welcoming anyone who wants to be part of a community of women striving to be the best version of themselves. And that is my story.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love moving my body and being outdoors. I would have a few hikes planned. The city, the beach and maybe even the Hollywood sign. I’d take them to sushi, a taco truck and a fun brunch spot. Depending on what’s going on, a play and a comedy show.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My BeneFit Body team and community and my Lululemon family have supported me and showed up for me in more ways than one. Last but not least, my mother. She believes in me unconditionally and that’s empowering.
