We had the good fortune of connecting with Noel Carroll and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Noel, please can you shed light on the creative pathways that have guided your career and role at the helm of an environmental company?
I went to theater school for college, so I suppose that I have always had an artistic bent. Surprisingly though, my college experience turned me off from following an artistic professional life. When I left college I immediately looked into more traditional work. I managed a coffee and smoothie shop and ran a 3D picture printing facility before eventually starting a business that produced industrial videos for sports leagues and small businesses. While there were some artistic aspects to that, I really focused on the sales and financial ends of that company, so it never scratched that itch. What pushed me into a career as an artistic professional, was when I started seeing old friends (who were pursuing artistic careers), and joking with them about silly story ideas, or dumb jokes. After having too much fun, and realizing that my business experience covered a different sphere of expertise than my friends had, and that our combined expertise and efforts could result in some artistic success, a new production company was formed. That company (Good Cops Entertainment) created multiple shows, commercials and a movie, did very well, and pulled me back fully into an artistic career. Today, with Biofriendly Planet that career continues, only now I also get to be part of solving some of the environmental problems that face us today.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Biofriendly is an environmental technology and education company. The business is unique in that it actively seeks out information about the environment for use in education, and uses that information to seek out and develop tech that solves the detailed problems we find. Additionally, we take pride in targeting our education toward people who have given up on the environmental cause, or who don’t agree that there are environmental problems. We then use humor and a lighter touch to show this audience that there are things that we can do better, but that you don’t have to change who you are or undertake impossible actions to do those things. An interesting challenge with Biofriendly was that it was founded to be a clean air company specifically. The company had one product, called Green Plus® energy transition fuel additive, that reduces the carbon intensity of fossil fuels. That product has been a massive success, removing over 12 million tons of CO2 from the environment, and has become one of the industry standards in green fuel. The challenge for me came because the world is making a natural transition to its next stage of energy, which is renewable, with electric transportation. Since taking over the company, we refocused the business toward new tech, while handling my personal desire to be creative with our education and entertainment platform, Biofriendly Planet. Today, the company is developing three new world-changing products, while bringing green education to hundreds of thousands of (previously disinterested) people every year.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’ve lived in Los Angeles since birth (except during college and many summers with family in Melbourne, Australia), and for me, this city is about the dive bar, house party and hole in the wall. Don’t get me wrong, there are some classics that a visitor needs to see; we would need to go to a Dodgers game, hike to the Hollywood sign, get a sandwich at Canter’s, maybe pop into the Dresden and tourist it out at Hollywood and Highland, sure. In reality, though, I would mostly stick to my pocket of L.A. (Pasadena) and live the way we do. I’d have a house party and show my guest how we do it, with a tasty keg of local beer (red solo cups included), a day-long barbecue and pool (inflatable or dug, whatever you’ve got), and a nighttime fire pit, music and laughs. I’d hit my favorite area dives, the Colorado, the Rancho, and the Mayan (formerly Brass Elephant), in Monrovia. Then we’d eat at some holes in the wall, like Burrito Express and Super Burger, but also the classic places that scream L.A. to me like In & Out and Tommy’s.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to pay respects to my Uncle Bob. Bob was a true entrepreneur and a person who took pride in confronting and solving problems. As a mentor, Bob showed me that a person can do nearly anything if they just decide that they want to do it, and was living proof that I could have a professional life on my own terms.

Biofriendly is a business that Bob founded due to his passion for the environment, and it has been my great honor to carry his vision forward since he fell ill in 2018 and asked for my help. He sadly passed away in 2021 but I hope I continue to keep his vision going and evolve the impact Biofriendly has.
