We had the good fortune of connecting with Oladotun Idowu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Oladotun, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
One day I was at work and experience nepotism for the first time. (This was my first job out of college so I was pretty green). I felt a lot of neglect and frustration being the only Black person in a lot of rooms. I started Sisters In Media because I wanted to offer women like myself more opportunities to connect with each other and also provide more media career opportunities for women looking to enter the space or grow in the industry. When starting Sisters In Media, my hope was to help women of color navigate the industry better with more networks and opportunities.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Sisters In Media (SM) is an organization for minority women in the media profession. The purpose of Sisters In Media is to increase the presence of women of color in entertainment while making valuable contributions to the industry and society at large. The organization is committed to the belief that diverse women should be presented with more industry connections and offered more opportunities to develop a career in media.
To strengthen relationships with diverse programs and companies
To present job opportunities for professionals interested in media
To increase the presence of women of color in front and behind the camera
To provide an outlet and space for women of color to discuss their experiences in the industry and ways they can foster inclusion in the workspace.
To bring awareness to the lack of diversity in media, while incorporating effective plans to ensure different ideas, stories, and perspective
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If a friend was visiting in LA, I would definitely tell them to go to Santa Monica beach during the day then grab lunch at the new Filipino restaurant Kuya Lord. If they are tourists they definitely should go hiking to see the Hollywood sign and take a walk on Sunset Boulevard to see the stars.
If a friend was visiting NYC, I would take them to the Rockaway beach, grab brunch at Kokomo in Brooklyn and have them take a nice stroll on the Brooklyn Bridge.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A huge shoutout to Sisters In Media’s Creative Director, Dayo Idowu! She is a true rockstar and has been a big part of the growth in our organization helming all of SM’s creative. We would not be where we are without Dayo.
