We had the good fortune of connecting with Oscar Aguilar Avellaneda and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Oscar, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Absolutely — being a full-time DJ and business owner is a dream for many, but it definitely comes with its challenges. Here are some of the hardest parts of the process:

At the beginning, getting people to trust you with their events — especially big ones like weddings or quinceañeras — can be tough. It takes time to build a name, get reviews, and earn repeat clients.

Marketing Yourself Constantly
You’re not just a DJ — you’re also a business. That means doing social media, keeping a website up to date, networking, answering messages, doing quotes, and always staying visible.

Managing Inconsistent Income
Especially in the beginning, income can be unpredictable. Some months are packed with events, others can be super slow. Budgeting and saving becomes key.

Dealing with Client Expectations
Every event is different, and some clients can be very specific or demanding. You have to be professional, flexible, and patient while still delivering a great experience.

Balancing the Workload
As a solo business owner, you wear all the hats — DJ, marketer, accountant, customer service, tech support, and sometimes even roadie. Burnout is real if you’re not careful.

Staying Inspired & Evolving
Music changes fast, and so do trends. You’ve got to stay inspired, keep learning, and constantly improve your sets and your business to stay ahead.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What really sets me apart is my energy — it’s something that can’t be taught. It comes naturally because I genuinely love what I do, and I love making people happy. Whether it’s a wedding, quinceañera, or any kind of celebration, I show up with that same excitement and passion every time.

Getting to where I am today wasn’t easy. There were a lot of ups and downs, especially in the beginning. But I’ve stayed consistent — every single day — putting in the work to grow, improve, and make sure my business is successful. The biggest tool I’ve had in overcoming challenges is customer service. I treat every client with respect, I listen, I show up, and I deliver. That’s helped me build trust and a solid reputation.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that consistency and a good attitude go a long way. You don’t need to have it all figured out on day one — just keep showing up and doing your best.

If there’s one thing I want the world to know about me and my brand, it’s that this isn’t just a job — it’s a passion. Every event I do, I put my heart into it. I want people to feel the vibe, have a great time, and remember it forever. That’s what it’s all about.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’d definitely make sure they experience the best of both Orange County and LA County — there’s just so much to do, and the weather is always on point!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Without a doubt, my family has played a huge role in my journey. Their support, encouragement, and love have been there since day one. And honestly, there have been so many people along the way who’ve helped me — mentors, friends, clients who took a chance on me — it’s impossible to name just one. This isn’t something you can do alone. Building a business, especially in a creative field like DJing, takes a community. I’m grateful for everyone who’s played a part in helping me grow, learn, and keep pushing forward.
