We had the good fortune of connecting with Parker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Parker, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
For me personally giving up isn’t exactly an option. The reason being a mixture of things, one being I went to arts college and high school so I haven’t really done anything other than sing for most of my life. The other being that giving up would be giving up on every version of myself I’ve ever known. My child self, teen self, and my current self. I have seen creativity and music as my career since I could see, so I guess I’ll never know whether to give up or not.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I listen to almost every kind of music so in turn I’m inspired by so many genres and artists. I can make sad indie girl music, I can make fun electronic music, I can make R&B, and I want to continue to make it all with the common function being that everyone who listens to my music pauses it in the car and says to their friend, “Did you hear that line? I’m gonna rewind it because you have to hear that line.” I am most proud of myself when I think that I’ve told a story that I know the exact details of, and so does someone else, but we are hearing different stories because of our different experiences. I went to The New School in New York City for two years before recently deciding to pursue creating music full time. The same people who bullied me into moving to LA happen to be some of my best friends and producers. So, was it easy to get where I am with them today? Yes, in the way that it’s a dream come true, no in the way that we still have a lot of hard work ahead of us. I am glad I spent a silly amount of money at art school because New York City is like an awesome boot camp that everyone should live in for at least six months, and because it matured me as a person and artist. I want the world to know that I am figuring it out every day and they should listen to my music and try to figure it out with me.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I just moved to the city so I know in about a year I’m gonna have a whole list that I wish I knew to mention now, but I have a couple spots from visiting that I love. The times I’ve been the friend that was coming out for the week, the Mulholland drive overlook has been a free thrill that I believe everyone should experience. Especially at night, it’s the best view of the city I’ve ever seen. That spot would make any artist pull out the notes app and start getting lyrically creative. This next one might be basic but Melrose has a long strip of thrift stores and other great clothing spots that are especially good for when you’re going to a party but suddenly realize you hate all the clothes you packed. Other than those things I think that the best friend I brought with me would probably be watching me record in the studio for hours at a time every day.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to give my shoutout to my producers and managers Joey Cavallo and Quinn Smialek. A little over a year ago I was busking at Washington Square Park in New York City and Quinn saw me and followed me on Instagram and if it wasn’t for that I wouldn’t have the bounty of songs we’re sitting on right now, the single we just put out, the video that went with it, or the two new friends I made out of it all. These two make me forget I only just started putting out new music because they make me feel like a celebrity every day. It is so validating to have talented people that you respect also consider you talented and respectable, not to mention I would force them to be my friends even if they didn’t think I was talented or respectable. Okay thats enough stroking their ego.
