We had the good fortune of connecting with Patricia High and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Patricia, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I first made the decision to start my own business after visiting the Black Creativity Career Showcase at the Museum of Science and Industry here in Chicago on Feb 28th, 2020. One station that caught my attention was the, “Building Bridges DIY Body Scrub Station”. After being inspired by Building Bridges, I started performing more research on the different oils and fragrances to use. Shortly after, I thought of my business name, ordered all the necessary items and launched my business March 2020 right before the COVID-19 lockdown.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Sunflower Sugar Scrubs products allows customers to take part in Self Care and Skin Care at the same time. By using our products you’re able to take time for yourself to improve your skins appearance. One of the things that sets Sunflower Sugar Scrubs apart from others is that all products are made in house and formulated in small batches to ensure longer shelf life. As the owner of Sunflower Sugar Scrubs, I am most excited to read the reviews about my products and the possibility of going nationwide. By continuing my business throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, it has allowed me to keep some form of income and focus on something positive. There are days where I don’t have sales and mistakes are made but I try to take it as a lesson. I use every situation as motivation to keep going. I’ve learned that it’s okay to keep learning new techniques and that it’s always room for improvement. I want the world to know that Sunflower Sugar Scrubs has is about encouraging others to love themselves and taking care of the skin their in.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give thanks to the Building Bridges Foundation for being an inspiration and giving me the push to start my business. I would also like to thank my mother Dr. Shaniqua Jones as well as all of those who have shopped Sunflower Sugar Scrubs.
