We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephanie Lawrence and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stephanie, what role has risk played in your life or career?
If I never took risks, I wouldn’t be the entrepreneur I am today. I know they can seem pretty daunting or even scary but the way I think about risk is pretty simple: be bold and authentic. Most importantly, remember to keep learning. How else are we supposed to persevere if we continue to do the same things? As a 14 year makeup professional, I decided to make a calculated risk and create a beauty product. Lip Lūffa is the result of years of taking risks. Turns out, risk taking is the bridge between where you are now and where you want to go.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
For 14 years I have strictly and proudly considered myself an artist. It wasn’t until a few years ago I realized I was much more. When I began my business, Lip Lūffa, I quickly realized the thing that set me apart from other entrepreneurs was the fact that I created something I would actually use in my artistry. It is authentic to the core. Surely, other artists might find a use for my product too. The idea that others might benefit from something I made, fueled me to make the best lip wipe ever created. The obstacles I had to overcome weren’t limited to science, business or logistics, it also included a mental aspect I had to quickly adjust to. Transitioning from an artist mindset to a market mindset took a little bit of time and a lot of learning. Once I overcame the sheer amount of information I was intaking, I was able to delegate my tasks and schedule the days accordingly. The ability to adapt is something I encourage other entrepreneurs to embrace.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my bestie were visiting the days would be so fun they would fly by! We would most likely spend our time on the beach doing yoga or taking a sound bath. We would eat at all the best vegan spots like Crossroads, Lotus Vegan, and Juice Crafters. And drink the best coffee from M Street and Alfred. I would make sure we saw the Dodgers play as well as a live show at either the Greek or Hollywood Bowl. LA has so much to offer, I would also be sure we went to the Getty Museum and LACMA. Topping off every trip to LA with many evenings spent simply watching the sun set into the most beautiful coast in the world.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate this shout out to my parents. Their ability to lean into risk taking has inspired me my whole life. From leaving their hometowns for brighter futures in LA, to real estate ventures, and even expanding their business, my parents have shown me the value of risk taking. Especially when things don’t work out in my favor, they have taught me grace and humility. Qualities I continue to value. My parents are unmatched.
