We had the good fortune of connecting with Patricia Peter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Patricia, how do you think about risk?
Risk-taking has played a significant role in my life and career. Embracing risk has allowed me to transition from a successful career in architecture and interior design to pursuing my passion in storytelling for film and television.
In my architectural career, risk-taking involved pushing creative boundaries and proposing innovative designs, sometimes going against conventional practices. This mindset helped me work with prestigious firms and manage high-profile projects, gaining valuable experience and recognition.
The most significant risk was leaving a stable Architecture career in Hong Kong to enroll in the MFA Production Design Program at The AFI Conservatory on the other side of the world. This decision involved uncertainty, but it also opened new opportunities, allowing me to combine my architectural expertise with visual storytelling.
Risk-taking, for me, is about stepping out of my comfort zone and embracing new challenges. It has been instrumental in my growth, helping me learn new skills, expand my creative horizons, and work collaboratively in diverse environments. Taking risks has led to significant achievements, such as the execution of the cave design and build for my first short film, FIRSTLINGS. It also fuels my ambitions to work in Art Direction and as a Production Designer.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
My Art and What Sets It Apart
My art is a unique blend of architectural precision and cinematic storytelling. Drawing from two decades of experience in architecture and interior design, I bring a distinctive perspective to production design. My approach is deeply rooted in creating immersive, authentic environments that enhance narrative storytelling. What sets me apart is my ability to seamlessly integrate architectural principles with the creative demands of film and television, resulting in visually compelling and contextually rich designs.
Proud Achievements and Exciting Ventures
One of my proudest achievements is the cave design and build for my first cycle film, FIRSTLINGS. This project allowed me to combine my technical expertise with creative storytelling, resulting in a set that significantly contributed to the film’s atmosphere and narrative. Additionally, working with prestigious firms like Fosters + Partners and Skidmore Owings & Merrill on high-profile projects has been both an honor and a testament to my skills and dedication.
Professional Journey and Challenges
My journey to where I am today has been anything but easy. Transitioning from a successful career in architecture to the world of film and television required a leap of faith and significant risk-taking. Enrolling in the MFA Production Design Program at The AFI Conservatory was a challenging decision, filled with uncertainties. However, my passion for storytelling and belief in the power of design to shape narratives drove me forward.
Overcoming these challenges involved embracing lifelong learning and constantly adapting to new environments and technologies. Collaboration has been key, working with diverse teams and learning from various disciplines have enriched my approach to design. I have learned to view challenges as opportunities for growth, pushing me to innovate and think outside the box.
Lessons Learned
– Resilience and Adaptability: Embrace change and be willing to step out of your comfort zone.
– Collaboration is Key: Great design is often the result of collective creativity and teamwork.
– Lifelong Learning: Continuously seek knowledge and stay updated with the latest technologies and trends.
– Balance Creativity with Practicality: Innovative designs must also be feasible and within budget.
My Brand and Story
My journey is one of passion, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to storytelling through design. My brand represents a fusion of architectural excellence and cinematic creativity, dedicated to creating immersive environments that enhance narratives. My story is about taking risks, embracing challenges, and believing in the transformative power of design.
I am excited about the future, eager to advance to Art Direction, and ultimately achieve my dream of becoming a Production Designer for major studio movies and Art House films. Through my work, I aim to inspire others to pursue their passions, take risks, and believe in the power of collaborative creativity to bring stories to life.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Absolutely! Throughout my journey, I have been incredibly fortunate to have the support, guidance, and inspiration of many individuals and groups. Here are a few shoutouts that deserve special recognition:
1. Mentors in Architecture:
Working at Fosters + Partners under Norman Foster, his visionary leadership was an invaluable experience. His innovative approach to architecture and design profoundly influenced my work and inspired me to push the boundaries of creativity.
My time at Skidmore Owings & Merrill, was instrumental in honing my skills and understanding the intricate balance between aesthetic beauty and functional design.
2. The AFI Conservatory Faculty
The Head of the Production Design Joe Garrity and instructors at The AFI Conservatory have been a tremendous source of knowledge and inspiration. Their expertise in production design and storytelling has been crucial in shaping my transition from architecture to film and television.
3. My Family
My family has been a pillar of support and encouragement throughout my career transitions. Their unwavering belief in my abilities gave me the confidence to pursue my passion for storytelling in the film industry. Unfortunately, my father passed away suddenly a few months before I started the MFA program at the
AFI Conservatory. I would like to dedicate my forthcoming graduation to him. He always emphasized the importance of education, persistence, and never giving up. His dedication to his work, even up to the age of 89, continues to be my inspiration. His teachings about persistence and consistency being the keys to achieving one’s goals resonate deeply with me. I know he is watching over me as I begin this new chapter, and his spirit guides me every step of the way.
4. Friends and Colleagues
My friends and ex colleagues have been a constant source of motivation and support. A big shoutout to all of them!
5. Last but not least, to everyone I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with, I believe our connection and partnership happened for a reason. Learning from each other and enjoying the process together has made every project worthwhile and deeply satisfying. Your dedication, creativity, and collaborative spirit have contributed to the success of each project in its unique way, making the experience truly enriching.
