We had the good fortune of connecting with Penny Harris and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Penny, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
People often think of acupuncture as a pain treatment, but it’s actually much more than that. The most common issue I treat in my clinic is fertility and hormone balance. There is a lot of research about acupuncture’s efficacy, and I’ve seen countless times what a life-changing addition it can be for someone trying to conceive.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’ve gotten to where I am in my business slowly over the past twelve years. I am, in all honesty, not a big risk-taker. I began subletting an office two days per week while I also worked part-time at the acupuncture college I attended, Yo San University. Eventually, I let go of my job at the college and moved to three days per week. It took until four years ago to actually sign my first lease and not be a subletter. It’s a really nice feeling to see my name on the sign outside of my office now, and my office is only a few miles from my home.
During the time of growing my business, I had two children and faced a pandemic. It has been a juggling act and also a beautiful journey of finding my own balance and helping patients to find their balance, as well.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Honestly, I have so much gratitude for my community. I moved my practice to Burbank eight years ago, and then a couple of miles away to Toluca Lake four years ago. My practice has been community-built by word of mouth and people sharing their experiences. Women have come in from hearing someone else’s fertility success story first-hand, or from patient postings on local message boards. I have no experience in marketing, and honestly have put all my energy into providing effective, quality treatments for patients, so I couldn’t be more thankful to have such a kind, supportive community that keeps me busy and in business.
