We had the good fortune of connecting with Peter Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Peter, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
We see so many incredible small businesses being born out of passion, necessity and opportunity. These businesses can do incredibly well because of the founders and their products and the drive between the two. Naturally social channels allow these people to connect with their followers in new ways that weren’t possible just a couple of years ago like stories and going live, and so these small businesses, whether they’re local or online, foster beautiful relationships with their followers. We know however, from experience, that growing that genuine following is really hard. You can’t buy those connections and doing something in Facebook ads that says I want to reach ‘women aged 34-52 who live within 16 miles of LA who watch these TV shows’ doesn’t get you the same customers as you get when you hustle for it. So we set up Ampjar trying to create a way for these businesses to grow in predictable ways that don’t need to be expensive.

What should our readers know about your business?
Ampjar is a community of businesses that lift each other up through shouting each other out on social and digital channels. We connect you with hundreds of other brilliant founders and whatever you do is what you get back in return. So if you want to be shared by some awesome brands, share the platform that you’ve created and you’ll be shared by others. We talk a lot about Karmic Marketing, do good things in smart ways for other people and you will absolutely get the value back in return. Ampjar makes sure you get it back from someone else in our community, but we believe it will happen anyway – if you do it right and from an honest and genuine place. We have a big team all around the world helping us to run the company which I love because while it can be tough to switch off, it’s awesome knowing that the business is working even when you’re asleep or watching TV! We raised venture funding a couple of years ago and are hopefully about to do the same again. This is a whole other world which I’ll happily share with anyone who wants help. The biggest thing I learned about venture funding is that it’s all about the story and having a founder that they can buy into. The last 12 or so months was tough with lockdowns and homeschooling but if you got through that, you can get through anything.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I come from Melbourne Australia so LA was a big culture shock to me. Everything moves so quickly and changes. A week is a long time but also nearly no time at all to get to know the city. I could write an essay here but here are my headlines! I think you’d have to stay somewhere cool like the Mondrian and then do breakfast right every day. Go to the big hotels and get breakfast at the Beverley Hills Hotel, at the Chateau Marmont and get that LA experience. Get someone to get you into Soho house to pull out the laptop for the afternoon in a cool setting. Get up into the hills for a view of the city that you can really appreciate the beauty of LA. Then go and see the best in each part of the city. I love Row DTLA, even just to work from there and check out the shops, love sidecar doughnuts in Santa Monica, Century City mall is kinda cool in a way we don’t have in Australia. Then 100% hit the beaches all the way down from Venice to Manhatten Beach. If you’ve got kids you’re going to need to do a couple of days at Disney too (no one else has this on their doorstep!!). Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many but one that stands out is Phoebe Sherman who runs Girl Gang Craft, She has an incredible community behind her but is also just in tune with making the right calls and is someone I love talking to to get the feel of what’s really happening! I know she’s an inspiration to many small founders and I love listening to her and getting tuned in through everything she shares.
