We had the good fortune of connecting with Phil Good and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Phil, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I wanted to start a brand where I could display my creative ideas for men, women, kids, babies. This is something I’ve wanted to do since I was a kid going to the beauty supply every weekend to buy durags and magnetic earrings. My goal now is to take over beauty supplies and put a black owned product in stores such as Walmart, amazon, etc.. We want to be worldwide and show people that we don’t have to go to beauty supplies for these products when you can shop with Phil Good Rags & get better prices, services, materials and more variety of flavors and designs.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I launched the idea back in late 2018 and the inspiration came from childhood memories of buying durags from the beauty supply every weekend and creating a product I can build my Phil Good brand. Phil Good is a brand that has more then one venture, right now its Phil Good Beats for my music production name and then there’s Phil Good Rags. I tend to expand the business something in 2022 so stay tuned! None of this is easy at all and what I’m trying to do is create financial freedom for myself and my daughter so I tend to challenge myself and step outside the box to improve the business. Some of the lessons I learned is when they say its who you know and not what you know BELIEVE THEM. I have gotten so many opportunities from vendor events, collaborations, vendors, brand ambassadors and so on the support has been outstanding. I believe its important to have good people in your corner when trying to build something special like I am, it goes along way in the business. Moral of the story its not what you know it’s who you know.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If one of my best friends came to Atlanta I would take them to a few night spots like Halo Lounge, Havana Club ATL, Rose Bar and a few strip clubs to get some good food & drinks and get right. During the day there are paintball spots, hiking, day parties, gun ranges, things of that sort and all will be a good time.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shoutout to 2 people one is my mentor Sam Johnson & the other is my 3rd grade teacher. Sam always encourages me to be better, think outside of the box and to not be afraid of change. He is the closest person to me that is a successful business owner which he gives me business advice all the time and was the main reason I got started my business just by giving me that courage, knowledge and motivation. The Other is my third grade teacher Ms. Hoard, she taught me leadership, respect, and how to speak up for myself. Til this day she doesn’t understand how much she played a role in my growth as a person and businessman & if you’re reading this I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you taught me then.
