We had the good fortune of connecting with Phuong Bui and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Phuong, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
This quote by Banksy really resonated with me this year: “If you get tired, learn to rest, not quit.” 2021 was a year of ups and downs and to be honest, I came out of it burned out and exhausted. Going into 2022, I told myself that this year, I will learn to set boundaries and learn to take care of my mental health. Being a small business owner, rest is not always at the top of my priority list, but what I’m learning is that it is just as important as all the other tasks on my to-do list.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
It has taken me a while to find my voice in my art, but I think I’m slowly getting there. I’d like to think of my art as cheerful and I hope that it brings joy to others. This year, one of my personal goals is looking after my mental health and I know that like me, it’s something that most people tend to forget about. That’s why I wanted to create a line of motivational products that will help serve as a mental health reminder but also look great and be functional. I would love for my brand to one day be known as the brand that uplifts and encourages others.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First stop would definitely be some açaí bowls from Blue Bowl in Orange for breakfast to give us fuel for the day. For lunch, I would take them to get some poke bowls from Wowpoki in San Clemente and while we’re there, we can visit the beach. For dinner, a trip to Honda-Ya in Tustin is a must for a variety of delicious Japanese yakitori and sake. Of course, in between in meal, some drinks from 7leaves are also in the itinerary.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shoutout all my fellow small business owners that I’ve met along this journey. They’ve helped keep me grounded and supported me in more ways than I can imagine. Their friendship and mentorship is what keeps me going, knowing I have a wonderful group of amazing people cheering me on. Being a small business owner can be lonely sometimes, but being able to trade stories and share our successes with each other makes the experience much more worthwhile.

I would also like to shoutout my husband, Johnny. Without him, PBcorner would’ve just stayed a dream and not the reality it is today. Thanks to his encouragement and support, I found the courage to follow my dreams and I can’t thank him enough for believing in me when I found it hard to believe in myself.
