We had the good fortune of connecting with Poohnana and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Poohnana, how do you think about risk?
Risk are those moments you know if you don’t do it now you will regret later in life. Resentment of why didn’t I took a chance and just go it!

I take risk everyday just being a plus size model pressing the envelope of apply to castings working with brands hoping that they pick me. I love taking risk because sometimes the opportunity or outcome weighs in your favor as positive. I take risk by wearing lingerie/bikinis and being self confident while posting it on the internet. The internet were if it comes off cheesy or trashy it can become a meme. But that god that was never my experience with social media. To take risks it’s all part of living your life free and the excitement of being bold. Risk is what shapes our careers and identity of who we are. Whether good or bad of the outcome of taking a risk it makes you original it makes you memorable. So if Im consider as being a risk taker damn it so be it!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Have you ever heard of faith? or just being just being somewhere at the right place at the right time ? Because that pretty much how I became a model. While working in education I came across modeling in 2014. A coworker/friend of mine introduced herself and informed me that she was starting an online boutique. She was like when I started up I really want you to come take photos because you photographed so well. I was like yeah ,hell yeah!

Afraid at first. I was very nervous and taken back because you guys all know the internet people are very cruel. But the photos came out so nice and I got so much positive feedback on social media it made me want to push it further. Plus being on camera is one of my dreams since I was a kid like I wanted to be on Disney Channel I wanted to be on Nickelodeon.

So starting out I will go to casting I was submit to agencies and I’m gonna honestly truthful with you I got a shit ton of no’s. I was either too big or I was too small so it kind of blew me off a little bit because I was like wow the plus size industry don’t down except me. Then bam! I got randomly picked to walk for Society Fashion Week LA for a international designer from Ireland name Rene Dieu. And from then on it was like a fire was lit , my eyes was brighten, and my career just started to burn and it like a wild fire.

But then that’s just like the industry and I really had to dig deep because my personality is so bubbly I knew I was commercial and I knew my runway walk slays. What sets me different from most plus size models is that I’m fierce, but My personality is so gravitating. And I have no problems with saying fuck society and that’s exactly what I did when it came to branding myself. I said I’m just gonna do my own thing I’m gonna stop doing the standard model society type of method and do my own thing on social media.

After breaking down and crying for the thousandth time to my boyfriend. He just will encourage me, to don’t stop, and just do my own thing. So I continue to submit to selective castings that will better my career. And I worked harder on professional photoshoots, hard on social media when he came to influencing. And that’s when my brand SheIsPlusSizeBeauty came alive! I started YouTubing and making video for small brand items. People loved them and they started to send me things. And them people wanted me to try they services to promote they businesses, and just kept growing little by little. Surprisingly it just became a thing.

SheIsPlusSizeBeauty is a body positivity brand for all types of plus size women. It promotes and encouragement to all women who are all sizes of plus size because we come in all types. You could be the nerd, they could be the goth kid, or it can be the sporty girl, or the introvert just all those diverse of plus size women. Whether tall, small ,curvy, or BBW‘s it doesn’t matter they’re plus size beauty. And I just want to show that onto the world. And God willing in the future it will be. And maybe one day I can do that for my plus size Men too.

My greatest accomplishment being a model is modeling in New York, landing my first campaign and billboard, and becoming a brand ambassador for multi dollar plus size brand called Fashion to Figure. But my dream is to be come a entire mogul and model in Europe, or over seas.

The biggest lesson that I learned or challenges that I’ve overcome is staying strong and focusing on your craft to do your own thing. Receiving a lot of no’s but yet saying fuck that I’m going to try another alternative route open doors and other people eyes to actually see my potential and beauty. I pray and talk to God about it all the time. And I try to remain humble and to continue to working and encourage other kings and queens out there that’s also working hard to build their brands and make it as a model or whatever they’re trying to do out here in this industry today.

Growing up in Compton my options was limited so I will always dream, fantasize, all while watching a shit load of television. I knew want I wanted and what I had to do to get it. And If showcasing my plus size beauty to world gets me a little closer, then baby give me my heels. And watch me slay!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to eat some great Mexican food. Los Angeles has the best Mexican food and drinks. We would hit up six flags magic mountain, go clubbing, hit up Santa Monica Pier, and possibly if possible a concert or too. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
