We had the good fortune of connecting with Power and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Power, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?

I would say the most prominent factor behind my success would be industry connections. Building strong relationships with industry insiders, such as producers, promoters, and other labels can provided valuable opportunities for collaborations and exposure.
The growing success behind New York Records consist of two major factors, talent and a strong A&R team. Discovering and nurturing talented artists is crucial in the music industry. Signing artists with exceptional skills and unique styles can set a record label apart from the competitors. Having a strong A&R team that can identify emerging trends, sign promising artists, and guide them through the music-making process is key to success in the music industry.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

The term Alpha woman describes my personality to a tea. I’ve always set big goals to challenge myself and diligently created ways to make it happen. My main goal after finishing my education was to dive right into my passion, which was creating a major record label based in NYC. I wanted to create a space for artists to learn the history of hip hop and paying homage to the fallen soldiers of our culture as well. Hip hop was born in New York City and so many legendary artists came from humble beginnings here. So I want my artists to inherited a piece of Hip Hop history by being signed to New York. I wanted to become the first black women to own a major label in my city and inspire young entrepreneurs who would like to be in higher positions in business. I want to open up opportunities for those who are ambitious enough to dream big.
New York is the stomping grounds for the greats like Jada Kiss, The Lox, Biggie Smalls, Lil Kim, Jay Z, Big L, Run DMC, LL Cool J, The Queen Latifah and many more. We’re excited on this journey and even more ecstatic to share the future of our legendary label with the world.
I stand today as First Lady Of Bentley Records / First Lady of New York Founder CEO of New York Records and we’re now scouting internationally for talented artists of all genres.
For my back story:
I started music early at the tender age of 12yrs old writing and preforming in school talent shows. I started recording in studios at 14yrs old and from there I began to nurture my gift. It was exciting to write a song find the right beat record it and play it back. It was a high me at a very young age. I don’t think I understood what I was doing, and how natural it was for me to understand the concept of making music by putting sounds together and having perfect cadence over any beat. I kept going and now we’re here.
This journey to ownership didn’t come easy at all though. I had to be strong and resilient throughout my life. I was my only supporter which made me work harder. I became a beast. I had a lot of setbacks also, but you have to fight for yourself even when your tired. Even when it doesn’t make sense, and even when it hurts.
I recorded music for a long without a real artist name. Until 2009 I was in the studio and my producer said ” Yo what are you going to call yourself” I didn’t realize I needed more of a name (laughing). He said “your name should be Power” and It stuck. As I evolved as woman I now understand the importance of rising and fighting for who you believe yourself to be in this world. Power in 2009 stood for survival. Today I stand for truth, bravery and resilience.
In closing no matter who you are and what you’ve gone through always trust the process and stand in your power.
