We had the good fortune of connecting with Prime Hendrix and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Prime, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I didn’t have to think too hard about that. To be honest I was more concerned with finding solutions towards social issues within my community. Laying down a solid foundation and plan was most important to me. A few months down the road is where we became established as a corporation.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Well, what sets me apart is my corporate business, Dae Gardens, which is an actual “for-profit” business, funds my non-profit organization, JUST PLANT IT. I launched JUST PLANT IT in the middle of the pandemic of 2020, so I was running into a lot of roadblocks finding funding sources. Every single day at the crack of dawn, I was contacting other organizations and certain city officials, who I thought had the same values and interests in helping our communities. After all the frustration of no responses, dealing with a lot of flakers, and being unheard by the city and individuals over and over, I finally reached a point where I said, “Fuck it, we’re gonna do this our way!” Went back to the drawing board and started mapping out a new route and strategies to do what I can to help our communities during these trying times. To think of it, what really sets me apart from the rest, is I really have a true connection with the people in my community. The things I do for the community are truly genuine and I only want to motivate others to do good. By establishing Dae Gardens as a business first I am able to self-fund JUST PLANT IT. Also, with a little crowd-funding and major support from community members and partnerships. I want everyone to know that Dae Gardens along with JUST PLANT IT is made for the people, by the people. Im proud of myself because now that society is “back to normal”, I am seeing a lot of individuals and organizations imitating and adapting our practices. Some good, some bad. Why I say bad, is because some of these individuals and organizations are those I’ve reached out to LOL. I did what I said I was gonna do from the very get-go and I’m still doing it. I’m no hater. I’m actually flattered because it shows what I’m doing is actually making an impact and influence.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh, they already know they’re gonna put some work in the garden. haha Im a simple man, I enjoy food too, so first day we’ll have dinner in my garden. Show them how to pick fresh veggies that we’ll be having with our dinner. Grab some red wine, a good rib eye and its a party! Next day, give them a tour of my public community garden i have locally, not too far from my house. Share the story of how Earth Strong Garden was born. Its summer so, gotta hit Venice beach. Venice, is my top 5. Not because they have the best beaches, but rich history, the people, shops, and locals! It has everything I love doing. Basketball, and just an overall fun atmosphere. I like to have fun when its time to play. I’m not about the club life no more, but I’m always down to take a trip, strategize, skateboard and shoot some hoops. Im an old man haha
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My late parents, They raised me up on values and respect. I give them a lot of credit for loving me unconditionally; like, I feel thats plays a big part in what I am doing today, My fiance’ and close friends have all chipped in to build the foundation. Tina, COO Building and managing website, handling fiances’ and design. My friends and team have been on the ground promoting, assisting and helping elevate our presence. Not to forget the community, i cannot put into words the love and care i have received. from donations, volunteering and supporting in anyway they can. Big shoutout to Bonnie of JUSTwater whose been major support since day 1. Also, Jorge, of The Garcia Center for the Arts, Josiah, of Music Changing Lives, OG Foods, Kareem G., and Justin, of 1LOVEIE for keeping it A1 with me since day one. They have all played a roll in introducing me to the community and their own organizations as one of their own. I always pay my dues. Theres so many other people that I cant name all, but you know who you are, but most importantly my business partner/mentor Geroge G. for pushing me to new levels and teaching me everything I need to know to succeed. He taught me the meaning of thinking BIG. Shout to my daughter Simay, love you!
