We had the good fortune of connecting with Qianzi Luo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Qianzi, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think taking risks is an opportunity for me to change the status quo, and it can bring me unexpected benefits. I used to be an engineer, but now I’m a graphic designer, and the switch I made has been an extraordinary adventure for me. When I decided to change my career, I was really worried about the risks, but after I made the change, I became more and more sure of my love for this career. Now I am very happy with the decision I made and I think this adventure is a huge power that push my life forward.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think an important difference between me and many designers is my professional background. I was a communication engineer, so one of my strength is my mathematics and computer knowledge. When I work as a graphic designer, I have more methods to explore creatively. Althoughit doesn’t always work, I am still very grateful that I have this skill. One of my projects is to use a mathematical calculation software Matlab to visualize sounds. The final product is very cool and makes me feel that everything is worth it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Baltimore, Maryland. This city is small but has a rich history. The culture here is worth learning, so I will take my friends to local museums and art galleries. In addition to the famous inner harbor in this city, there are also specialty shops owned by residents on the ordinary streets. I think these places are very worth visiting. At the same time, the restaurants in these places are usually recognized by local residents, so these places are good to walk around and you can learn about the local culture and details of life.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Not only does my mother play an important role in my life, but she has also been a vital support in my career path. A few years ago, I was very anxious when I was considering changing my career. I was afraid of the risks involved in making this decision and other’s opinions. To my surprise, my mother said she would support me unconditionally. This is very rare for a Chinese mother because most Chinese parents always want their children to have a successful and steady life. At that time, her attitude and words were the boosters for me to make the change, and her financial support was also a necessary condition for me to make the change.
