We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Lynn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachel, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
When pursuing an artistic path, taking risks is an inevitable part of the process. In fact, pursuing an artistic path IS the risk – especially when we think of traditional ideas of security and success. For me, pouring my heart into my songs and sharing that with people is like a drug I keep coming back for, and so I take all of the associated risks: risk of rejection, risk of self-doubt and the aftermath, risk of lost investments, to name a few. Knowing that the path I’ve chosen is riddled with risks normalizes taking them every day, and so I keep going, hoping that I can use my music to connect with people and heal myself.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I stay busy writing music, performing under my solo project, teaching voice and piano lessons, and singing in wedding/event bands.
I’m a classically and contemporarily trained singer who started writing my own songs as a kid and never stopped. At this point, I’ve released four EPs and a single, with over 270k streams to date. Numbers don’t matter, but people do, and those numbers represent listeners who choose to play and save my songs – a concept that will always be wildly rewarding for me.
It’s my hope that my honesty, my voice, and my organic approach can connect with my audience and pull them into my world a bit. My dream is to sing my songs for the people who truly want to hear them, so I’m always looking for ways to find my people; the people who will get it, who will get me. It’s a simple idea, really, but it’s a hard business, and it’s an ongoing pursuit to build a musical community around my work.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
LA is such a mecca for vegan food, so I’d take them to all the spots! Cafe Gratitude, Crossroads Kitchen, Sage Bistro, Pura Vita, Doomie’s, Nic’s on Beverly, and so many more. I would definitely take them to see some music at Black Rabbit Rose, Hotel Cafe, The Mint, Troubadour, Silverlake Lounge, Viper Room, to name a few venues. We’d hit up the jams at Bar Lis and The Sofitel, we’d visit the beach of course, we’d go on a hike, and we’d have to make sure we caught a few of those breathtaking LA sunsets!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to give a shout out to my brother and sister who have supported me and encouraged me since I first decided to pursue a career in music. They come to shows, they share my content, they believe in me, and I couldn’t be more grateful. They, along with so many others, contributed to an Indiegogo campaign for my EP Warmer, so I have to use this opportunity to thank everyone involved in that endeavor. The supporters truly made the project happen, and it’s really a testament to what community can do.
