We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Pally and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rachel, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Growing up, my parents owned their own business. They worked hard towards a goal that meant a lot to them. They poured their hearts and souls into the business and it fulfilled them on so many levels to do something they believed in. Being business owners also allowed for flexibility in raising kids, as they were able to be present for us. They could build their work schedules around my brother and my needs. I watched the way they navigated work and life and family and blended it together in order to have a full life. After college I didn’t know what I wanted to do professionally, but I did know that I wanted to work for myself, like they did.

What should our readers know about your business?
I started my business in 2002 with the intention of dressing all women. I expanded my range to include Plus sizes in 2007, when I realized there was an entire demographic of women who were left out of the contemporary fashion world. Since the beginning I have been producing my clothing in downtown LA at small family-owned factories. We pay a good wage, we ensure safe and healthy working conditions, and take pride in making clothes that are beautiful, timeless, and special. I’ve seen my share of ups and downs in my 17 years in business, but have learned so much along the way. I have made countless mistakes, learned hard lessons, and bounced back more times than I can count. And yet I am still here, loving what I do. I am my brand – I make the decisions, I do the designing, I manage my team. I am so proud of what I have accomplished in the past 17 years and look forward to 17 more!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Find a hidden cove north of Malibu – hike to a waterfall near Pasadena – pick up burritos at Burritos La Palma – check out the Getty Villa – play scrabble on the Silverlake Meadow – ride bikes in Venice and eat Gjelina take out – take in the lights from the top of Mulholland at night – grab lunch at Grand Central Market – salsa dance at El Floridita

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate my shoutout to my mother and my community of female friends who keep me lifted up and held, who believe in my vision and support me every step of the way!
