Meet Rachel Rotabi | Functional Health Strategist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Rotabi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachel, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I’m from the San Francisco Bay Area. My mom was an outdoor science teacher, and I spent my childhood hiking in the Santa Cruz mountains, looking for salamanders, owls, and banana slugs. This led to my love of both nature and science. In my early career, I used my mechanical engineering degree to help build medical devices to help people, and today, I use that love of science to help rebalance my client’s health. To this day, being in the mountains or exploring tide pools puts my spirit at peace. I try to do it often!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve had a number of different chapters in my career, which all compliment each other. I have worked in the healthcare field alongside cardiologists, so I have a grasp on the clinical side of health coaching and the workings of the western medicine health system. I’ve been a corporate working professional and a working mom, so I understand intimately the challenges that my clients face in balancing it all. I’ve faced chronic health challenges with my daughter, so I understand how challenging it can be to find the answers to these issues, and especially the anxiety it brings as a mother of an ill child. And now through the lens of functional medicine, I have a whole other set of answers to those challenges.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well in my local area, the South Bay, it would definitely include a visit to The Source Cafe for some amazing tasting healthy food! Also a walk on the strand, hike/visit to Terranea Resort for the breathtaking views. Outside the “bubble,” I love the Arts District downtown, the Rose Bowl Flea Market, hiking in Malibu, and strolling Abbott Kinney for shopping, and catching great music – loved seeing the Avett Brothers at The Greek a few years ago.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I dedicate this shoutout to Tracy Harrison, the founder of my functional medicine school, The School of Applied Functional Medicine. She has been a great role model to me both scientifically and spiritually in how to show up in the world. I would not be able to do what I do for my clients or for myself without all that she’s shared with me!
