Meet Rae Akino | Visual Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Rae Akino and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rae, why did you pursue a creative career?
An artistic career was the only thing that made sense, that could make other things in my life make sense. A career in the arts was scary to other people so I avoided it and didn’t take my talent and skills too seriously. But then life started to happen—that part of life where you absolutely have to start doing what other people think you should be doing—to not just survive but to live.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I strive to weave narratives that reflect the complexity of identity and the power of ethical representation. My work spans diverse mediums—including painting, mixed media, and muralism—each piece serving as a dialogue between personal experience and broader societal themes.
My exhibitions embody my dedication to inclusion and empowerment. My objective is to make the viewer connect and think outside themselves or what they know to be true. I aim for my art to challenge conventional narratives, urging audiences to see beyond the pretty picture on the wall.
Public art serves as a visual testament to the transformative power of creative expression. I’d like for my work in the community to further underscore my mission of using art as a tool for social change.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I frequent South LA so if I were to have a friend stay with me we would go to Hilltop on Slauson Ave for Jammin’ on the Hill on Thursdays.
I love going to Grand Central in DTLA. I know it’s a tourist hotspot but if my friend and I go during the weekday, its always a good time.
My friends are also artists and creatives so we would also check out the newest exhibit at LACMA.
Lastly, we would take a hike at Baldwin Hills Scenic overlook to end the trip.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out my villages in both D.C. and Seattle. The roots of Rae Akino were watered in DC but I bloomed in Seattle.
